Adjusting gear box linkages

It's just to make sure that when you've positioned your gear lever into a gear, the cables move the box into that gear smoothly and fully. The fact there's cables, and they're adjustable, means over time it could get a bit sloppy/notchy, and in extreme cases maybe even not go into a gear correctly. Doing the reset will take it back to near factory feel (wear and tear on the gears themselves aside, anyway).

Wicked explanation thanks gav so this won't have a negative effect on a standard box? And just out of curiosity will this work on Ibiza? My mates Ibiza won't go into 1st without crunching he's replaced pedal box but didn't make much difference??

Nope, no negative effects as long as you do it right! There's different steps for 5 and 6 speed boxes, his Ibiza gearbox will almost definitely be doable but just need to make sure you're following the right instructions.

Cool cheers gav?

No it doesn't.

edit - I just saw your post above about your modded 'box. That might reduce front to back throw, but it seems that Pyro is asking just about the cable reset, which won't do anything about the range of movement in either direction on its own.

I thought he was talking about the mod. I have done it along with the cable reset and its all really simple to do. The cable reset centralises both the shifter and the linkage into the home positions giving a smooth gear change.

Did this today, and for me it made a massive difference! Gear changes are much smoother and goes into gear really well.

Took all of 5 mins and didn't cost a penny lol.

Would recommend this to anyone with 'notchy' gear changes, its so simpe to do and literally idiot proof!

Just done this today and it has made an improvement. I'm not exactly mechanically skilled but still managed to do this so its easy enough. My box has always been smooth but during start ups in the cold it can get slightly notchy especially in 1st and 2nd. Hopefully this would sort it out. Going to change the oil next week so the box should be silky smooth :)

A handy tip if anyone gets stuck like me. When I tried to lock the box though the mechanism couldnt be pushed down and I panicked a bit. Turns out the mechanism can rotate around pin, towards the two linkage chains. Once I did this and found the 'home position I was able to get the bit down and lock the box.
