My 03 Leon 1.8T died on me the weekend just stopped on the motorway:cry: Got the AA to take us to my local Seat dealer, its cost me £400 up to now for them to strip the engine to find out whats wrong as it had no compression and wont start.

Right they got back to me today and its seems its been starved of oil and needs new cylinder head complete, water pump, oil pump, timing belt kit, timing chain, chain adjuster

Total £3329.74:cry::cry::cry::cry:

But one of there technitions will buy it as it stands for £800 the exhaust just cost me £400 just dont know what to do.

Any advise........................................................

Ive just found a complete cylinder head with new valves for £250 local to me... and an full engine for £900..............

Re: Advice please

Im just gutted dont know what to do:confused:

I thought it would have been worth more than one of there mechanics offered...........

Re: Advice please

it surely must be worth more than that??? maybe just chancing his hand!! dont know much bout engines but i would of thought even if you get that cylinder head from your local garage and add up the cost of the other parts you need then labour on top of that,it would be much less hassle and coinage just to get a new engine mate

Re: Advice please

If you have room you could always break it... alloys and bumpers and side skirts alone would probably get you more than this mechanic is offering. Deffo go for a second opinion.

Re: Advice please

Get on ebay, find an engine and get a local garage to fit it (i.e not SEAT)

Cheeky fooker, offering you £800. If you took the £800 quid you would have to put a lot of cash to it to get another car similar to the leon, I would have it repaired

IT IS.

you think he's offering to buy it out of the goodness of his heart? no its because he will fix it up and sell for profit or have a car at a bargain price.

Dealer is probably making out they are your friend and helping you out.
In my experience they all try this, but are businesses and are interested what they can get out of you.

hit the nail right on the head there andy!!

Re: Advice please

Yeah definitely get an engine sourced and fitted yourself, will work out much cheaper.

Re: Advice please

sounds like a techie playing dumb to me mate, would wack an engine in himself and make a fair wad doing it.as all have said, source an engine and if your not confident enough get a specialist to whack it in for you

Re: Advice please

and whatever you do, don't ever go back to that dodgy SEAT garage ever again. It's garages like them that get them the name "stealers".

Re: Advice please

Change of plan now, ive got a cylinder head now and Seat rang me this morning, the guy wants to try and help me and get thew cost down. So whats happening now is

I supply the head and they supply everything else and fit for £1275 which i think is good, as if i picked the car up now and got it towed to a different garage it would cost me £500 for the work they have already done and getting it towed.

Thoughts please..........................

Re: Advice please

Maybe I'm wrong but over £3000 for a cylinder head replacement seems WAAAAY too much. Even £1275 in total seems like daylight robbery to me. I know it's a totally different car etc. but I had the head gasket die on my Fiat Punto last year and that cost me about £350 in total I think, surely the same thing for a LC can't be 10x as much?

I'd get them to give you a complete list of all the stuff they say needs done. Then take the list and ask around, find a garage that you hear good things about from friends. Speak to the garage and ask how much they roughly think all that might cost, they should be able to give you a reasonable idea if they're any good. If you stand to get it done a lot cheaper then pay the current lot for what they've done and arrange for the car to be towed to the new place.

Re: Advice please

I do hear what your saying mate but its going to cost me £500 now for the bill i owe now and getting it towed to another garage......................
