Have you added any antifreeze to the engine, it should be a 50/50 mix it reduces surface tension and helps dissipate air locks?

Try parking the car on an incline, reservoir tank highest, and go around the engine while it's running squeezing the hoses and rocking the engine and it should help get rid of any air locks!

squeezing the pipes just seems to make the expansion tank level fill and the water boil :(

easy fix
drain fluid
disconect rad hose(bottom one)
get hose turn it on flat out
jam it in expansion tank
let it run through and get all the rust/shite out
keep squeezing the hoses
make sure that the waters coming from the rad and start the car as it will run the waterpump
keep it running till no more shite comes out then flush out system
add antifreze in a botttle 50/50 (16v use G12 liquid)
add it to the expansion tank while the car is off
keep squeezing hose till its not moving anymore ie no more will go in
start car and keep adding till your at the right level
put expansion cap back on
drive it round the block
check levels and top up as required

then change your oil!

I always keep my car running, cap off for like 30-60mins (holding it at 1500-2000rpm every so often)

then giving a good spin on the motorway.

then go home, let it cool down for 30-45mins, then take cap off (over night)

then check level in the morning, and fill up if needed.

voila ;)

but if hes getting air lock hes gonna need to flush it through first and get all the crap out

yes he will need to get all the old ones off by taking off the rad pipe etc.

well then flush all it out, then top up again?

You sure there isnt a hole in the tank somewhere??

I had a problem like that a while ago, when the system got to working temperature the a tiny hole/split opened and the coolant leaked through it.
