Aircon compressor: Should it make a whirring sound?

It's spooky that this thread has been resurrected today!

Today is the day I finally got around to taking mine in to the dealer's to investigate my whirring aircon. They found that it was low on gas, so they re-gassed it - and found that the noise went away.

Apparently the aircon compressor has a "scavenge" mode that it goes into when the gas is low. They said that in this mode it switches itself on and off very rapidly, and they're guessing that this could have been the source of the noise.

Whatever, on the way home it does seem to have cured the noise - and the aircon is now capable of blowing air cold enough to freeze the old danglies off!

Hi, resurrecting an old thread but my 08 Ibiza is also making a whirring/tapping noise from the air-con. This seems to come and go and at times can be quite loud. Switching the compressor off stops the noise instantly.

The air-con works fine and the gas level is ok(been checked) Its not a big issue but I am curious if any more people here this and if anyone has had a definate fix?

hi peope this my first reply my seat leon just started making this noise aswell when i turn the econ it goes away im doing mechanics at college took my car in my teacher said its the ac compressor it needs to be replaced. Just wondering is it worth gettine a new one or just a reconditioned ac compressor

ive got that problem as with my compressor bt my clutch on the compressor pulley wont disengage so its noisey as f****k when u have the air con on so it stays in econ. problem sorted lol

I have the same sort of noise too, i just run it in ECON, no noise that way
