Hi guys, just a quick (idiot) question. Which driving modes are permanent ‘All Wheel Drive’. I guess ‘Off Road & Snow’ but I’m literally just guessing. I may not even have a grasp on how the system really works

I'm not sure that any of the modes are permanent four wheel drive (or they all are, depending on your definition of permanent). Power is sent to the front wheels unless traction is lost when it is then distributed as required. I believe that the snow and off-road modes tweak the traction control to allow more slippage which helps in slippery conditions.

I see you bought it from my local dealer. I had a look at that car myself and then one day it went. Now I know where.

Enjoy.

Like LIttle John said there's no permanent 4WD on Ateca nor any Haldex equipped car. All are Front Wheel cars but when front axle loses grip, Haldex clutch engages rear axle.

If you want permanent 4WD, get a Subaru (the old ones) or something with a reduction gearbox.

I twiddle the knob to off road & snow when I've driven in snow and twiddle it back when off - no problems. Also noticed that catch mode on normal when I've been pulling off from an icy bit parked up when the rear has engaged. Though "rear has engaged". Heavy old standard Ateca diesel.

Like others have said its not permanent 4x4. The different driving modes basically change the engine/gearbox characteristics i.e. different revs/different gear changes. The system detects slip and the traction control transfers the drive (slipping wheel) to the wheels gripping. If I recall the maximum transfer between front/rear wheels is 50% of power. When using the launch control the clutch release is changed to minimise slippage of the wheels.
The facelift has an updated 4Drive set up.
