Hi all

One (and likely more) of my alloys is leaking air. I've been driving on the spare for a few weeks now with no issues but obviously my car looks stupid.

I took the alloy to a local refurber and they cannot match the colour so not really sure what to do as I imagine most places are the same when it comes to matching the colour.

I've been checking eBay every day for one to come up that isn't painted as I'm looking over £90 to have the alloy refurbed unprimed and then to take it to a body shop to have it painted.

What would you guys do? I'm trying not the break the bank as I don't have a lot of spare money. I did think to have all of the wheels done in anthracite (black car) but this will cost around 240 to have them all done, tyres refitted and rebalanced etc. and it's a lot more than I wanted to spend!

I refurbed my wheels myself for a fraction of the cost but it only comes out well if you have a compressor so you can use a proper spray gun and use proper paint and lacquer.

£90 unprimed?! You should be looking at £15-25 to repair a damaged wheel, and £40-50 for a refurb of each wheel.

So if they can match the colour, up to £75 painted, or if not you could have all 4 wheels refurbed in your choice of colour and have change from £200. £90 for a wheel repair is daylight robbery!

Acksaw, £90 a wheel is ridiculous! Where's that?

As BrettBlade has said already the average going rate for a wheel re-furb is about £50.

If it's the bead that's leaking, try this first:

Go to your local tyre place with your wheel and find where the leak is coming from using their water tank.

Get them to remove the tyre, grind the bead rim back to metal and use thick tyre glue. (It looks like tar and doesn't wear away.) Put the tyre back on.

I had this repair done to one of my old sport wheels and it lasted until I swapped the tyres to the steelies.

Cost me £15

I probably wrote it a bit odd. What he said was for them to shotblast it and get it all ready for paint it would be about 40 then on top of that getting a body shop to paint it and then getting the tyre back on and balanced...

I tried the black tar stuff and it lasted about 2 months before leaking again :(

Wish I had the money to pre-order a Mk7 Golf R ha

I did look at Damo's Cupra readers ride ages ago and the anthracite looks pretty decent on his black Cupra but still, 240 all in is a lot of dough for me at the moment as I'm trying to save for my own place :(

I paid £160 for four alloys refurbed, including loan of a spare set of alloys whilst they had mine so that the car could stay on the road. Included tyres off, acid dipping, refurbed in anthracite, tyres back on with new valves and balancing.

You can get all four powdercoated for £120 ish or even cheaper if you are close to Birmingham. City powdercoaters is the place.

By the time you've factored in wheel/tyre removal and refitting you're around the £40-50 a wheel mark though. Unless they do that at City Powdercoats? Cheap if they do!

Doing it yourself like that isn't going to cure my issue long term. I've had the bead sealed and it just leaks after 2 months again. They need shot blasting etc.

I've booked it in.. It'll go on the CC!
