Just wanted to say "Skard, thanks mate"

I have had a brand new large display cluster for ages, picked it up on ebay (other auctions sites are available) for just a tenner ages ago, I have taken it to a few stealers and they all looked at me stupid when I asked them to fit it.

Took me about 45 mins to do.

1) battery disconnected

2) remove the cluster surround, need to remove the leather look cover from the top of the steering wheel, it just pops off with the aid of a flat blade, now pear inside look left and right at the bottom you will see one torx screw either side. once these are out the surround will come loose with some pulling and pushing, it can be a bit tricky to get past the steering wheel, i found it best to come out on the right. pulling the trip reset knob off will help, it just pulls off

3) now you will see the cluster, it has 4 torx screws holding it in, remove these and it will come out, again need to pull hard as it is in an electrical socket

4) refit in reverse

5) refit battery

6) open the link in post #14 found by Skard, this will walk you through the reprogramming of the unit to the car

7) job done, just need to get my amber steering light off, it's playing silly beggers with me

thanks again mate, will post some part numbers I used tomorrow when I can get my hands on them

Does the plastic screen section ( clear Perspex) on the clock remove? Seen some with damage and wondered if I could swap my glass over...?

The perspex itself is glued on.
My old clocks are Siemens VDO and the front unclips, if your old and new clocks are the same brand (maybe some have Bosch like older VAG's, I don't know) then you should be able to unclip your existing ones and swap them over.

Here's a pic I took...

Sorry didn't explain myself very well. I have the half height standard fr clocks, same as you pic but white/silver face clocks. Guess the only way to tell is to whip em out

Still not sure what you mean?

The plastic inserts are seperate to the front panel that holds the perspex.

Yeh there's just six tabs to release and the front portion (containing perspex) seperates from the rear, as in the pic I took. Should be the same for yours?

Is it possible to fit the full size screen MFA+ to my Altea Freetrack 1.6 tdi 2012 LHD it would be a bonus to be able to change the Km's to MPH. I have tried to do this with VCDs with other members help but I understand that this is not possible with the small screen? aggie

You probably can, but the new clusters will have a different immobiliser etc so you'll likely need someone with a genuine VAG Commander (I only know of a couple of people with it).
Or perhaps a local dealer will do a retrofit (£££££)

Does it not work if you change any settings to GB MPG? Even rest of world?

cheers Skard I will try the local dealer and see what they say. The cost will probably be an arm and a leg. aggie

Hi Skard your advice would be appreciated. I asked my local seat garage to change my digital speedo from kms to mph but they say this cannot be done without changing the instrument cluster but by doing this they say that I could be immobilised and there is no way of recoding the new cluster. I think they are worried about carrying out the work. What do you think? The vehicle is a Spanish registered Altea Freetrack 1.6 tdi 2012. I have a Ross-tech interface but there is no labels on the long coding only ticked boxes. I have been trying to do this for ages I don't mind spending the money if it can be done. I am sure it can be done but how? all my controls are worked from the steering wheel. aggie

Hi mate

I am really not sure having never done any work on a white MFD.
They are correct in that the car could be immobilised with a cluster change, however as they are supplying a new one as a registered dealer, they will be able to get access to the SKC to install it, then re register all keys to the cluster (which holds the immo).
They don't actually inspire confidence in me if they don't know this much!

The method I used is not possible on later cluster's.

I reckon what you need is to speak to someone with a genuine VAG Commander interface, I know of two chaps with this, look up EDDIE-NL or KALU on Google search, I can PM Eddie on another forum if you give me your details (email, build date, current cluster part number etc) then you guys can get in touch?
Problem is if either of these fellas do it for you, they'll probably need the car too. But I guess you could sort something out if you are driving back to the UK?

Hi Skard thanks for getting back to me it seems there is hope for me yet. I have given up on my local dealer as good as they are they don't want to get involved in case it goes wrong. find attached a print out from my VCDS.

Thanking you in anticipation aggie
