Pardon my stupidiness here.......

I own a LCR and have been reading the posts on this forum with regards to modifying the engine.

I've begun the journey by purchasing the powerflex dog bone mount. Next hurdle is the air filter.

I am opting for a Green panel filter, however have read that you guys "smooth," the airbox to accomadate the filter.

What exactly does this mean, to smooth an airbox, how much will it cost, and what addional parts will i require.

Cheers, Kris

you don't actually need to do anything to fit an aftermarket panel filter. all it costs to smooth the airbox is your time and patience. the idea behind it is to remove all the excess plastic from inside the airbox to improve airflow and increase power. if you have a dremel then it shouldn't take too long but i suppose it would be possible by filing and trimming with a sharp knife.

Does smoothing the airbox actually make a difference though? I really can't see how cutting a few ribs out of the base will make any noticible effects on performance.

you could probably search on that subject. i'm sure there have been people that done this mod and also done before and after logs on vag-com to see any differences.

I have to admitt to thinking the same here,

But having said that i thought i'd give it a go, and am in the process of prepping an old airbox and putting in a 3inch cold air feed, after doing some reading on the subject from the above threads, and also on the net theres some interesting stuff, about air flow.

Haven't got to fitting it to the car yet, probably over the weekend, then I'll have to see if i can see any difference,

But like Skorch say's it's all the little improvments that make the whole package, so let's hope it's been worth it.

I've got a bmc panel filter instead of the green one, don't know if theres any flow difference over the 2 tho' without doing back to back comparison's which i can't be bothered with tbh.

I read a report yonks ago on bmc filters v's k&n and the bmc came out with better results, so I've used bmc in bikes over the last few years with excellent results, hence why i got one for the car.

Interesting post mate.

I've got a spare airbox sat in the shed that i was going to have a play with. Just wanted some feedback before i wasted a few hours doing it. If people have had improved airflow readings then it's gotta be worth a bit of graft.
Suppose your right when you say it's the little improvements that add up to the overall effect. Will have to borrow the dremel from work this weekend
