I have just taken the glovebox out to change the insert in it with one of an A3 and having finished and re-fitted the glovebox, the airbag light comes on.

When the key is first turned in the ignition the light in the centre console goes out, so does the one in thespeedo (as they should do and normally do). But about 3 seconds after both lights go out, the one in the speedo cluster comes back on again.

Any idea how I can solve this?

Cheers

Might have bumped the passenger airbag terminal when you were removing the glovebox mate, but a little strange why its going off then coming back on. Thinking about it if you have changed the insert did it have anything to do with the lock to turn the passenger airbag off. Might be that connection thats the issue. Hope this helps mate.

PS what is the mod with putting the Audi insert in then and is it worth doing?

I had to detach the airbag swtich which sits inside the glovebox. I didnt like the leon insert having two separate compartments when the cd changer was removed so I have used the leon fase and the a3 insert. The airbag switch used is the original leon one in the a3 insert.

Do you mean I might have snagged the connector on the airbag unit itself rather than the switch?

And to add to the puzzle - I just checked the wiring on the back of the airbag.......it is firmly pused on and doesnt look damaged etc

Also, the switch itself that turns the airbag on/off works correctly........the airbag off light comes on when the airbag is in the off position as it should, and it goes off when the airbag switch is in the off position! I dont understand why the warning light is coming on when the switch is clearly working!

If you mess with the connectors on the airbags then it needs to be reset using VAG-com or maybe by resetting the ECU ( -ve battery terminal off for 20 mins). Or it will keep coming back on.

so there isnt necessarily a fault then?

I did disconnect the battery and leave it for 15 mins or so before fiddling with the switch (having said that, I can't remember if I did disconnect it after a test fit?? :S )

Im pretty sure that the problem is because you detached the airbag switch that has caused the light to come on. Mine is currently on as i am due to change my steering wheel and disconnected it to remove the old wheel and has stayed on. But mine stays on when you turn the ignition on and doesnt go off and then come back on like yours. Your best option is VAGCOM and see what the error code is. Im pretty sure that a reset will clear the bulb. Might be worth disconnecting the battery for a bit and then reconnecting, but i would be doubtful it would sort it.

Lol, thought that there might be a few answers while i was typing my long winded answer! Basically its as Allen states that if you unplug anything to do with the airbags then the light will stay on until you reset it on VAGCOM.

Battery is disconnected now until I have to go to autoglass at 2!

Where can I download VAGCOM from?

You can safely unplug any airbag switch as long as you dont turn on ignition, so bet done with batt off! But I would disconnect battery for any work with switches or electricals on car, just in case!!
