I'm in the process of fitting cruise control to my Leon Mk1, but have come across a problem. Removing the steering wheel.
I'm sure most of you know that they have an airbag on the steering wheel, and these can be dangerous if tampered with. I'm confident i can do this DIY job, but would like any advice on removing the wheel before i go any further. I have found a guide on the net, but it is a little vague.
Any help is appreciated.
Cheers
Dave

disconnect battery 10 mins prior to starting (remember to get your radio code or it'll be very dull on the way to work tomorrow)

THen.... round the back of the steering wheel will be 2 holes, it'll either require you to stick a slotted screwdriver in there to tease some clips free, or an allen key to unscrew the bolts.

once you've done that - the airbag 'pops' out - but is still connected to the wiring loom - just remove the connection

Then undo the BIG nut holding the wheel onto the spline

Pull the wheel clear

U really dont need to dissconnect the battery. Just dont have the ignition on!!

Getting the airbag off can be a pain, turn the wheel till one of the holes is at the top and using a small screwdriver, put that in the hole and you will eventually feel a springy bit of metal. Push this down towards the bottom of the wheel and the airbag should pop off on one side. Repeat on the other hole.

When u take the nut off, check that there are markings that will tell u where abouts to put the wheel back on. If not, make your own.

Dont just pull the wheel off, push back on the black plastic on the steering angle sensor so not to damage this part (its expensive). Dont be tempted to spin the sensor as it may not be back in the same place when u put the wheel back on.
