Hi guys and girls not normally in this section but im looking for a car for the girl friend as she has just passed her test and we went to drive and look at a little arosa and was really disapointed and heres why.

1. the guy wasnt honest in the ad and the body work was not 'mint' (not the cars fault)
2. the clutch pedal felt like it was going to fall off
3. the gearbox was really really stiff (worse then our works van:confused:)
4. Done the old check under the oil cap and id say the head gasket was on its way out but the amount of white gunk under there
5. the engine was very tappety was sounded very rattle
6. there was huge amoust of body roll that was quite scary at time (we didnt go above 40)

this was all on a car that had done 57k. just wondering if this was common for them or if this one was just a dud? it has put me off a little i have to say! but im hopin you can restore some faith for me!

Sounds like a dud - remember, it's basically a VW Lupo - do you think they'd be THAT bad?!

i kknew they were just a lupo basically, but not knowing much about either the lupo or arosa's i thought id ask before we go to see the next one:)

oil pump issues on some cars (I think 1.4's) internal oil pump wasn't pumping oil to the head resulting in cam lobe scoring and later head issues.

If you look at a model comes with rear disks rather than drums take it for a 5 mile + test run as I tried a Lupo Sport and the rear brake calipers seized when they got hot.

The doors are huge an heavy so check door hinges are in good order. Can't think of much else other than usual used car checks.

it sounds like its been used and abused, my mum has had hers 7 to 8 years now and the only things we've had to fix (touch wood) are Bulbs (typical) clutch, exhaust and recently spark plugs and leads. I learned to drive in it and drove it for a few years till I got my own Ibiza. Great wee car efficient and cheap to run, I couldnt say a bad word about it. Keep lookin, there will be a good one out there somewhere.

By the way ours is the MK2 1.0mpi and still running like a clock (touch wood)

thanks very much! we are looking at a 1.4 due to it being used on motorways aswell as round town and thought that a 1.0 might be a bit underpowered

helping to restore some faith now! how due you find the 1.0 for things like motorway use? been a bit put off as they seem a bit underpowered on paper

the 1.0 was and still is grand, to be honest though we dont really do that many motorway miles, but when we do the car will sit quite hapily at a steady 60-70 mph (eventually) ... might seem a bit noisy though. For someone who has just passed their test the car is more than enough, at the end of the day they are restricted to 45mph arn't they.

Good luck, hope you find what your after.

I have a 1.4 auto version and its great on motorways. Capable of doing up to 80mph comfortably so you shouldnt have any problems at all. I think to be fair you may have found the worst kept Arosa going in history ! Common things to check are really what you have discovered, they do have pedal box issues like the one you looked at. Chances are if it doesnt feel right it isnt right. Keep looking and you will get there, when you do you will enjoy the fun !

I think you have too!

Mine is a 98 reg, bought 4 1/2 years ago with 42k on the clock, and it's still going strong at 85k with the only faults (yet *crosses fingers*) being a couple of flat batteries, the usual wear and tear on bearings and so forth and accident damage!

Bought an identical one (practically down to the day of registration - the day after mine!) to fix mine after an accident and it was in awful condition having just failed it's MOT. Rust in various places, rolled like an ocean liner, and the engine sounded like a bag of gerbils..!

i dont think there is any restrictions on speed. i have not read anything stating this yet:confused:

Did a good job on that didn't I? But he's still going [B)]

BTW, Chris - we don't have the 45mph limit over here in the UK, new drivers have pretty much no restrictions (except they can only get 6 points before loosing their licence, rather than the full 12).

Lucky yous, over her in NI I was not allowed to exceed 45mph for a year  not fun

The car itself was not restricted, we just have to be careful when applying the right foot to the go faster pedal

Personally think that the 1.4TDi was the pick of the bunch.

I had a Lupo GTi 1.6, and my wife has had the Lupo 1.4 Sport (100PS), and an Arosa 1.0L (50PS), and all 3 lacked any real torque. I drove someone else's 1.4 TDi PD and it was a revelation. That engine was a perfect partner for the Lupo/Arosa. Mapped it would be economy with great drive.
