Had my car broken into on Friday night, they broke the drivers door window but were disturbed by the alarm (and me). The local police said that a few golfs and audis had been done for the integrated units over the past weeks around where I live! Keep vigilant people, I didn't realise an oem unit would be in such demand but a Google search reveals otherwise!

Apparently they've been taking the job lot. Tbh I didn't even hear the window go (parked right under the bedroom window) just the alarm go off and shot straight out of bed. Police said they're going around with all the specific tools just to do these cars over.

The most common stolen things are original nav systems - to be upgrades to other cars, and airbags and xenon headlights - expensive stuff easily removed and easily transported, that every crashed car needs to have replaced.

the ones I've heard of that are being stolen are the clip on units you get with ibiza's and mii's not heard of any of the ones being nicked from the leon- they are coded to that car individually and are useless in any other car

They won't be useless in other cars otherwise they wouldn't steal them, it's just software which they'll crack and recode to use in other cars. They've cracked the ecu software hence aftermarket remaps, so the sat nav won't be a problem to unlock.
Its a shame as there was a time when you had to have the face off stereo in the dash to prevent theft and that all went away when car hifi got integrated. Now it seems the thief's have moved on to the integrated nav systems as they cost so much new. Where's there's theft there's also demand for the stolen items, I guess there's enough people with low end systems that are prepared to buy stolen nav systems cheap.

Gutted for the op, but glad you stopped them in the act.

Tbh the most inconvenient part is the lack of glass available. The car is currently stashed in my unit out of the way until Monday. Ill be considering Pentagon Supa Glass to protect it from now on.

Surprises me at the demand for these as you can go to any car audio retailer and get a Bluetooth head unit with nav for around 3-400. Dare say the OEM unit nav is garmin or Tom Tom software

That's the problem.
We (society) need to persuade everyone that by buying that cheap unit they are fueling the market for thieves.

Every chance their car would get broken into later to have the unit re-stolen.

Shame so many seem to let their morals go out the window as soon as the promise of getting something on the cheap appears.
