Thought this may interest a few people.

Got a phonecall friday from a mate of mine who's car had overheated and decided it no longer wanted to start.

Friday evening i set about taking the head off to inspect the damage, it wouldn't turn over by hand so i knew there was going to be something bent inside, what i wasn't expecting is what i found.
Firstly the intercooler pancake pipe had a nice puddle of water inside it, once the inlet manifold was off i was greated by quite a bit of metal rattling around inside.
Upon peering down the inlet ports all cylinders had small splinters of metal on top of the valves bar cylinder 4 that looked like this.

After seeing that i carried on stripping it to see how much damage it had done, i knew it would be bad but wasn't quite expecting what i found, pics explain why i couldn't get no4 spark plug out aswell.

Comments welcome

Holy sh!t! What caused it?

Still not 100% sure

Think maybe the oil cooler.

We had a passat 20vt recovered in a while back with all valves bent, VW's diagnosis was the oil cooler had ruptered inside and caused the oil to mix into the water and somehow hydrauliced the engine.
Once we stripped it we found all bores full of water.

This one had no water in the system and oil was very watery so possibly the opposite symptoms, water into oil and it got that hot it ate itself alive.

Be interesting to hear any other opinions though as it's a strange one

No4 is scored badly enough to warrant a rebore although not as bad i was expecting.

I may get block checked and bored out as a spare/project if owner doesn't want it back

No idea to be honest, guess that's the cylinder that gave up first and everything locked up before the other valves broke.

Car was running a decat, bailey dv (i think it was) and an unknown remap, everything else is stock

Makes me wonder how long he took to notice the subtley different engine noise it must've made, before he got off the loud pedal...
