hi can anyone tell me what the standard timing marks are on an auq engine. im sure the flywheel shows tdc through a hole in the gearbox but cant remember which marks show the correct cam position.

thanks neil.

There is a small mark on the Harmonic pulley at the end of the crank (the auxiliary belt pulley)

It's not too easy to see though, basically when it lines up with a small indent on the lower metal cambelt cover then cylinder 1 (nearest to timing belt) is in TDC.

The upper cam pulley has a small line that lines up with a line on the rocker cover, if you have the rocker cover off then there are marks (milled flat cuttouts) on the camshafts at the timing chain end, these need to be lined up with the little arrows on the cam bearing caps.

when putting belt on check check and check again its timed up correctly as its easy to turn either cam or crank by hand and if it's even slightly out it will put the engine light on when you drive up the road due to variable value timing being out.

As was on my cupra after having a belt fitted by a main dealer!local garage checked and a tooth out, engine management light was on!

was the fault something like value timing control limit exceeded or something? When i did mine the cam was always a tooth out so was a case of trial and error getting it right. You'l be ok now you know to check check and check again. It'l only put light on once you start driving. It won't happen just idling on the ramps. So you won't know till its all back together. I've got a tensioner locking took set if you you to borrow them?

Dont remember what the fault code was, Main dealer wanted to fit a camshaft position sensor, obviously for a large fee. This happened before I purchased the car, previous owner had his pants pulled down, had enough and sold it to me with engine management light on.

Do you have any pics.

Yeh here you go, i have edited the pics with red arrows to show the timing marks -

Here is one of the camshaft timing chain -

let me know if you need anymore pics or advice :)

good pics there. With ref to the top image. When the belt is all timed up and bottom pulley is removed i highly recommend painting one of the teeth on the crank sprocket and a corresponding paint mark on the block so you can check for tdc without the need to keep putting the bottom pulley back on. Like use tippex as mentioned but i don't think there are any marks once bottom pulley is off so make your own, just be sure they align up with each other.
