I'm no clutch expert i'm afraid but I think the power delivery is sharper with a SMF over a DMF.

I was always under the impression the DMF was only used as a purpose to remove harmonic resonance, and it was its physical makeup that made it heavy in relation to SMF

I cant really see why it would be a major benefit having the same weight SMF as DMF, other than longevity and resistance to serious power something the stock DMF might fail under,

Id agree the power would be more direct between shifts on and off the power, not sure it would be overly obvious though, it'd be nice to see peoples results witht hem fitted to be fair

Well without a doubt they put the power down better and certainly feel better than a dmf

In what way do they feel better and put the power down better? When I had my clutch and DMF replaced it felt 10 x better than before. Could it just be that they feel better than the old tiered clutch and FW they are replacing?

I've had a new dmf with standard clutch a new dmf with uprated clutch and now a helix smf and race clutch it just feels a lot better no worries it will slip its hard to explain how it feels it just feels better lol

I suppose it's one of those subjective points like how you set you suspension up or if you go for a loud or quiet exhaust. I just wonder if I'd rather go for a lighter SMF at greater cost? I think I'd like the chatter and could live with a slight loss of drivability for freer revs. I guess it's difficult to say though with out living with the set up for a while.

Well put it this way if your going big power stage 2 /big turbo then the dmf will not cope I've done mine purely so it's ready for any thing I throw at it

This was the reason I changed from the standard gear. The big turbo guys pushing 400+bhp from their S3s have a mixture of clutch setups on ASN. Some of them stay with the DMF but change the clutch and pressure plates.

How does a a DMF work and why does it fail?

Not my words but an interesting summary:

The flywheel is effectively a weight which is fastened to the end of the crankshaft of the engine. The power from the pistons tends to be created in ?pulses? and the weight of the flywheel smoothes out these pulses by providing inertia to the rotating engine. As well as providing a weight the flywheel has a gear around its circumference on which the starter motor operates and is a convenient means of attaching the clutch which provides a variable connection to the transmission.

Modern diesel engines generate high torque and as a result they need extra smoothing out or ?damping?. To help with this process a DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) is fitted. This is effectively two flywheels that transmit the drive through a number of springs which cushion the drive to the transmission.

So a flywheel is a way of storing energy. So between gear changes, firing of each piston and while idling the revs don't fall to low. To heavy a flywheel and you lose energy turning it. To light a fly wheel and not enough energy is stored for when you need it. The revs drop and the engine needs to build up the lost energy.
I'd guess that the Springs fail in the DMF and that's why they have a limited life?
So the comprimis is performance v comfort. This Awsome clutch is supposed to give the best of both. A compromise in it's self. It would be good to drive a standard set up, Awsome set up and a lightened SMF back to back on the same car. That's not likely to happen LOL. so as usual yous pay your money you take your chances.

I've been watching this thread with some interest (not only for the useful product review from people have actually used this clutch )
My standard clutch is starting to slip if I try accelerate in 6th on my LCR and I think from the good reveiws its had, I'll be giving Awesome a call.

I see your in Lincoln good man. What colour is you LCR?

From what i've read, one of Awesome's test cars was running over 400lbft torque without issue.

I have an 03 LCR in red. I may have seen you earlier on Tritton road, about 1330ish, but it may have been another Yellow LCR
