My 02 Punto was the posh car not the banger :D and mostly reliable enough for 10 years from new (apart from 2 head gaskets), but at that age it had suspension brakes steering tyres and ABS issues prior to the MoT and I wasn't going to chuck 8-900 quid at it. So as a seemingly perfect runner it went to the scrappers around the corner, and I bought the Proton seen above.

My Leon cupra mk2 was definitely a banger when I brought it for £700 it’s all fixed up now and is actually a nice banger now. I think with the £8k+ I’ve spent on it if I ever sold it it’ll be worth £701 😎

Update on Albert the Almera.

Albert has had a full clean out, even polished the outside. It really is an ugly funny looking car.

Albert has had the tracking done and 4 wheels balanced, 1 x wheel was 85 grams out and the other 3 ranged from 25-45 grams out, no wonder Albert didn’t like speeds above 50mph. Cost £49

Albert now drives like a Rolls Royce.

Also Albert now has music, i had to pay £18.99 for an unlock code, because you know a valuable stereo system like Albert has is very nickable.

Also Albert now has 2 working remote key fobs, 2x new batteries at £4

Tell you what though the car starts on the button and had a timing chain kit last year. The front crossmember has been replaced recently. The rear crossmember does appear to be quite rusted but i’m going to attempt to de-rust / treat it in the summer

Yea cheap but I genuinely have spent over £8k on parts for it labour is free thank god. I’ve probably spent more then that I haven’t gone through the paperwork to tally it up coz I know I’ll feel sick haha. It’ll make a good track car when it’s finished and I’m definitely enjoying it as it should be in rain or sun guilt free.

Well...first post since 2015 :):):)
Haven't had a SEAT/Leon since then. Did have a Skoda Superb last year if that counts....

I did dabble in bangernomics.
Lockdown hit so decided to not extend the Skoda lease and just buy a banger. Bought a 500GBP Nissan X-Trail.
Loved it. Replaced the rear suspension for 63GBP delivered. In the end, it lasted 3 months and the immobiliser died. Not worth fixing so crushed it for 230GBP and bought a Peugeot 307SW for 550GBP. It's been going since October. We amicably call it "The Ming Mobile". When we got it it was absolutely bathed in dog hair and STANK. Cleaned it up and it's been amazing since. The only thing it needed for MOT was new A-arms, which cost me 80GBP. And I bought a new exhaust, which was blowing, from Poland for about 90GBP. I only ended up fitting the back box.

It just works out so well... Skoda lease was over 350P/M, excluding insurance and fuel. So within 2 months you're already quids in compared to if you were to lease or buy or whatever.
We've saved thousands by now. All went towards importing a rather funky car from Japan. Still cheap, but not quite bangernomics.

I'd recommend bangernomics to anyone. The Ming Mobile got me, the family and dogs around for months and never failed us. It's great also not giving a crap. It's never been washed and nor will it be. We go fishing and when we're done, we bung our muddy crap in the back and off we go. Go out for a walk and kids have dirty shoes? Who cares?! Get in!
It's liberating.

Sure you can spend 500GBP a month on a fancy car to show off but in the end you're still going to get from A to B the same way. I'll just get there with more money in my pocket :)
