Bass/Tone settings

Hi all,

Been a casual lurker for a while but I thought I would sign up to ask a question which has been bugging me.

In regards to setting up bass/treble, is there a way to do it with out using the manual equalizer?

Another issue I am having is that when the subwoofer kicks in, it lowers the volume of all the other speakers.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Have you fitted an aftermarket sub? If so you will need to set the bass on head unit to zero and adjust the gain on the amp.

Hi Fatalist,

Do you have any pictures of the upgraded speaker package? is there a dashboard mounted speaker or any other way to tell its the upgraded package (like little logos on the grills etc). I am coming to a mk3 Leon from a Volvo s40 which has the Premium audio by Dynaudio which quite frankly is ridiculously good. I am a little nervous but hoping the upgraded Seat audio wont be such a step down although i didnt get to hear it before ordering.

Any comments or pics would be much appreciated.

I've got the Dynaudio in my Golf. The seat sound system in the demo was better!

And I had the demo for a week and 2000 miles so long enough to compare properly.

You do get an extra speaker on the dash and there's a "Seat Sound" badge on the door speaker grills.

Hey, yep as stated above it comes with the center speaker and it's all badged up.

Funnily enough for a month or so I had a Leon MK3 without the upgraded speaker set up, and quite frankly, I actually think it might have been better - especially at higher volumes.

Saying that, at more reasonable levels, it is okay. But worth the extra money (baring in mind you have to go for the spare tyre option) that will be for you to decide!

I wish there was a simple way to adjust base treble etc.

No idea how best to adjust the frequencies.

Indeed - I literally have no idea what I am doing with the EQ - I actually just leave it on standard. Anyway, I'll try and get some pictures later today of the setup.

I presume the lower the frequency the lower the tone your changing so presumable the 25khz one would be the best to adjust for bass for I've changed it and notice little difference.

Basically, it's bass on the left and treble on the right. The middle one is the (sorry ) 'mid' type adjustment.

There are 5 sliders, which in my head I label like this:

(1) Lots of bass. (2) Bit less bass. (3) Middle. (4) Bit of treble. (5) Lots of treble.

^ This is probably a highly offensive terminology to use for any sound aficionados. Anyway, it works for me

In mine, after MUCH fiddling, I've got (1) a couple of clicks up. (2) is slightly higher. (3) is two clicks below centre, then (4) is in the same place as (2), and (5) is almost at the top.

And the woofer is set to +3.

If you put the middle one right at the bottom it makes everything sound a bit like a hifi in a shop. If you put it right at the top, it makes everything sound like a nightclub where the speakers are about to explode, makes the sound seem a bit harsh.

I guess everyone's hearing is different though.

Oh and of course, no sooner do you think 'got it', then a song comes on which happens to have a bass note on it which you've not accounted for, resulting in the doors almost blowing off, as happened to me yesterday.

Random question - on the Golf mk6 stereo, I could adjust the sound for different media (i.e. FM, DAB, CD, AUX) and the stereo would remember each different set up. On the Leon mk3 it seems to keep the same set up for any media. Anyone experience differently?

I found the Leon's std sound a bit too bright for my taste and had to push the sound stage to the rear 2-3 notches. The speakers in the Golf had warmer sound and better staging.

Nevertheless, I think the sound is alright and much better than std stuff on Hyundai or Fords I have rented recently.

Thanks Bubbs for your suggested setup. I tried my messing around myself but made it sound poor. Using your setup and it is a vast improvement over mine.

Will live with it a bit to see if it's right for me or needs minor tweaking.

I have replicated a typical 'rock' setup on mine. Basically upping the highs and lows a bit. Imagine a 3 year old drawing a seagull - first up 2, second up 1, third the same, fourth up 1, fifth up 2.

Sub is on + 3

I find this is a great balance for all of my music at all volumes and does a good job of removing the harshness from radio voices.

I still wasn't really happy with the setup. In the end my ears and my music settled for the following. Might be too bright and a little warm for some.



From left to right:

125Hz +4,

250Hz +3,

1kHz +1,

5kHz +3,

10kHz +7.



Subwoofer +2, and Balance fader set to:



Front/rear -3 (focused towards the rear) as i find the sound stage is stronger at the front so balance it out by biasing it towards the rear.
