On the Arosa are the tappets hydraulic or self adjusting ? and when you change the wheel bearings do you need to change the brake drums at the same time ? I have a polo haynes manual and am a little confused, Vagcat isnt helping either. My tappets are making a horrendous noise and they need fixing  I have a 1.4 Auto - dont know if that makes any difference at all ?

you don't need to renew brake drums when you change wheel bearings, will let you know about the tappets in the next couple of days, been a good few years since I got my hands dirty with engines but these type of tappets used to be adjusted with a shim on the top of the valve spring.

Hydrualic followers are self adjusting, theorectically you can pull them apart and rebuild them but since they're roughly £12 a pop its not really worth it

No need to replace the drums when you change bearings.

Thanks guys :D will get this all sorted out within the next few weeks as our council are going to fine people who repair their cars in the road. Means Im screwed as the council wont allow us to have a driveway as we are end of terrace  !! We have always repaired our cars outside our house - seems a bit strange really. Stu do you know where I can buy a new set of tappets from ? I tried calling Seat and they werent terribly helpful as Carl wasnt there and he is the man in the know. Am I looking at a messy / complicated job ?

What?!?! thats a crock of ****!

Followers you can get from either Euro Car Parts or GSF and roughly cost the same, tho genuine ones are about £18-20 +vat each IIRC.

Not a messy or complicated job, just long winded - the camshaft will need to come off so that involves taking off the engine mount, auxillery and cam belts, distributer, rocker cover etc
