Best bulbs? for white light?

Probably a silly question here, but if my headlight heights/beam angles needed adjusting (i think the passenger side is a bit weird) then they dont have to replace the headlight unit or anything do they? i dont want to buy bulbs then have to have the whole thing replaced.

also does anybody know anywhere you can buy the bulbs in bigger packs than 2? as i would hope it would be cheaper to buy a 4 or 6 pack, but cant seem to find any on the net.

cheers

dipped beam and main beam bulbs are different, you need to look at a headlight bulb list to see if your dipped/main beams are combined in one bulb, or you have two, but by the sounds of things, if you have 3 bulbs per headlight, ur dipped and main beams are separate, so you need h7 bulbs for dipped beam, and h1 bulbs for main beam, if a bulb pattern is weird, the bulb might be upside down , the are shaped like a t in the locking end, and the sticky outy bit needs to sit in the cut out...the bulb will fit in any position u put it, but not correctly, and that can cause the pattern to look wrong, if its too low/high/left/right, a garage with a beam pattern tester will need to be used to be adjusted

Yeah I have 3 separate bulbs. So I need H7 for dipped, H1 for main and what about the side lights?

I will leave the indicators in the headlights as standard

Does this double pack: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Osram-Night-Breaker-Extreme-Sidelights/dp/B004J3F7DO/ref=sr_1_2?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1301991746&sr=1-2

have the same H7s in as this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/H7-Osram-Night-Breaker-Plus/dp/B004BSL42U/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1301991746&sr=1-1 ?

As if they are the same it means I will save money buying the side lights?

If they are the same then I just need to buy these 2 things to replace all the lights in my headlights (excluding indicators)?:

NEW Osram Night Breaker PLUS H7 499 +90% 12v 55w + Free 501 Extreme Sidelights

and then http://www.amazon.co.uk/H1-Osram-Night-Breaker-Plus/dp/B004BSR09G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301993668&sr=1-1

Total: £31.15?

Sorry for the load of questions, its the first time Im doing anything to a car so am unsure on a lot of things.

Cheers

All the internet car bulb sites I've ever seen have a search facility that lets you put in your car details and will then tell you what bulbs you need. See for instance:

http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/
http://www.powerbulbs.com/
http://www.ringautomotive.co.uk/

They will all tell you
Dipped beam H1 (55W)
Main beam H7 (55W)
Sidelight 501 (5W)

The sidelights are low-powered marker lights to be left on while parked in a dark street to show other road users where you've left it. Low power means they can be left on for hours without draining the battery. Not to be used while driving. Unless they are faulty there's no real reason to replace them other than for the look.

Osram Nightbreakers or Philips Xtreme Vision are both good for more light output from a "normal" filament bulb i.e. not a HID (gas discharge) bulb. I've had an earlier version, Philips Vision Plus, in my headlamps for three years or more now, and I'm happy with their performance.

The prices of those Amazon deals are very good, 40% cheaper than the specialist web sites. I can't help wondering how they've managed to do that. If you do buy them, check them over to make sure they really are Nightbreaker Plus, as far as you can.

Thanks,

Do I just assume then that the 501 lights in the double pack would be the right wattage? As it doesnt give details :headhurt:

If they are then from what you have said buying those 2 bits for £31 will do the lot- which is pretty cheap! Nice alternative to HIDs for me, and no grey line on legality either :)

correct, 501 are the corrcet wattage as they are what are used for sidelight bulbs, 501 will be 12 v/5w

it might be tight doing the passenger side bulbs, but just be prepared to disconnect the battery, so be sure to have the radio code ready, the little bulbs (501s) it doesnt really matter if you touch them, but h1 and h7, dont touch the glass, if, when u open the box u see the bulb tip, close the box and open from the other end, so u grip it by the connector block end

Thanks a lot guys. I've ordered them all, and am quite hopeful of good results and the whole thing will only cost £30 =)

Had a quick look at the lights today and I think I will need to find some better instructions on how to replace them, hopefully with pictures lol the one I had a quick read of on a thread in here just said take the plastic cover off- but I couldn't even see how to do that lol

Will have a proper look when I'm ready to fit them

I replaced my mains with phillips blue visions and dipped with x-treme visions, think i read somewhere that the diamond ones weren't road legal? might be wrong there.

The blue visions do give a really nice white light and whilst the x-treme ones on dipped are very powerful, they don't give the 'crispness' that white light seems to give.

I will at some point likley replace the x-treme visions with blue visions and see how I like them.

On the topic of fitting the bulbs, I found this out when I did mine:

Removal:
1. Unclip the two springs/clips holding the plastic back cover on.
2. Remove plastic cover
3. Remove wire/electric block
4. Unclip the metal spring clip by pushing it toward the the front of the car and moving it sideways away from the hook on the bulb.
5. Pull out the bulb...done!

Attaching new bulb.
1. Position the bulb in the hole, NOTE: The bulb has a right and a wrong way up, there is a 'lug' as my dad called it! on one side of the bulb (the side of the bulb with the flat edge). That side should face upward, you will know it's right as the bulb will sit flush that way, and not any other way.
2. Re-clip the spring. This SHOULD be easy, assuming the two bottom legs of the springs are still in the holes below simply bring the spring up to rest on the bulb, and hook it over the bulb by pushing it slightly to the left and pulling it toward you.
NOTE: If you have taken the whole spring off, as I did the first time, put the spring legs back in the two holes below the bulb before trying to clip the spring over the bulb. If you don't you won't have any tension and the legs will be fiddly to get in!
It's also tempting to clip the electrical block onto the bulb before trying to put the spring back on....this is wrong! I did it, got frustrated with the spring and had to take the other side cover off to see how it was attached before I worked it out! doh!
3. Reattach the electrical block by pushing it on....simples!
4. Replace the plastic back cover and clip the two springs back in place to hold it on and you're done.

The second bulb literally took 30 seconds, once you know how the spring works it's childsplay!

EDIT: Not sure if I took any pics when doing it, will have a look on the camera when i get a chance.

Did this for the indicators if it's any help! http://dougmcdonald.co.uk/blog/2011/01/30/seat-leon-silvervision-indicator-fitting-guide/

Blue Vision bulbs are tinted, painted blue to give a cosmetic effect, so as to look like HID bulbs. The blue paint absorbs some of the light, so you're actually getting less light on the road than you would from a clear bulb.

The light from them is bluer than that from an unpainted filement bulb, which appears yellowish by comparison. Frankly I couldn't give a toss what colour the light is as long as its bright and road legal.

Both main beam and dipped beam are normally 55W bulbs, which is the maximum legal power. Cleverly constructed filament bulbs can get more light output, more lumens, out of a 55 watt rated bulb, by better filament construction and higher gas pressures. HID bulbs are even more efficient, most are rated at 35 watts but produce much more light output than a filament bulb.

Philips Diamond Vision are not road legal in the UK - but they are 55W bulbs, so it isn't power that's the problem. I expect they are too blue, and you are not allowed to show a blue light unless you are police or emergency services.

I did my front bulbs today in a matter of 5 minutes, my 1 year old son could manage it, (he likes playing with tools) all you need is a phillips screwdriver and away you go

Cool, I'm waiting for mine to arrive, will probably do then Sunday if they are here by then. My side lights are quote yellow. My dipped beams are relatively white as they are, just seem very dull on the road. Looking forward to seeing the difference
