Hi guys
So I was driving home on Monday up th M1 travelling at 70mph ish. When all of a sudden the coil light came on followed by the battery light, the car then cut out and I lost power steering. I managed to get into the hard shoulder (from the outside lane) and after panicking for a few seconds turned the car off left it for 30seconds and turned I back on again. The fault seem to clear and I drove it home. The next day I took it straight to seat, explained the fault and left it in there 'capable hands'

3 days later (today) after numerous updates from the dealer I picked the car up after being told it was sorted. 2 miles down the road it did it again. I turned the car round and on the way back to the dealer it did it again. Dropped it back off and was told "it very strange this has happened and when we road tested it, it was fine"

I've spoke to a German specialist (a reliable friend who is a mechanic) and he said its a problem with the injectors and they will need replacing at a cost of £700 per injector. Plus labour. Appantly it's a common ish fault with the audis and some got recalled.

Anyone else heard of this common ish fault?

I remember reading about this some time ago. From what I recall, the injector issue involved VW / Audi cars fitted with the previous generation "PD" diesel engine based on Siemens technology and not the newer generation "CR" ones which are based on technology licensed from Bosch. Whatever the cause, I wouldn't want to lose all power on the outside lane of a motorway and have to bring the car to a safe stop with impaired steering and brakes. My first thought would probably be something along the lines of "oh dear" (or words to that effect!) when I lost all power and the second would probably be a quick "thank you" when I pulled it over safely.

The info on the vagdrivers site listed above does not mention the CAHA engine which is in the ST170 so it's unlikely to be that.

I would have hoped that something as serious as this would have logged plenty of fault codes to give clues as to what's wrong.

The CAHA is a SEAT engine code used in the Exeo. This same engine has different codes, depending on the technical setup per car model and manufacturer within the VAG group.
That the engine isn't listed on the VAGdrivers website, doesn't mean the recall does not apply to the CAHA engine from SEAT.

I know about the problems with the pd engines as I previously owned a vw Jetta and it got recalled for the injector fault. So not having much luck. Apparently it's a fault with the Bosch injectors. So I'm told although I haven't read up on it. It's been in the garage for yet another day and I got the impression that they're scratching there heads. Great.
Lets see what tomorrow brings

got a similar problem on a golf 1.6 common rail diesel
no fault codes on car
when it goes wrong it doesnt run long enough to get into measuring values to check readings
i reset the egr valve and it cures the problem for a while so new egr valve is to be fitted at £260 trade and it looks like a tw-t to fit

might be barking up the wrong tree here, but thats what happened to my vectra when the alternator went. lost power, power steering, brakes etc... and after leaving it a few mins would start again for a bit then go again..

Well just a quick update on the car. Spoke to seat this afternoon. And guess what they've put all these problems down to?

A faulty earth connection.
Yes that's right all this panicking of faulty injectors and major work and it was a pissing faulty earth.
Oh well pick it up tomorrow lets see how long it lasts

As above that injector fault is on SOME 2.0 pd engine, the ones that use a Siemens unit injectors, mainly 170 models and passat 140s... Not the common rail engines..

Did seat say which earth it was??
