I dont know too much about throttle bodies so please forgive my ignorance and correct me if im wrong about anything but whats the deal with using bike throttle bodies on cars?

Ive done a bit of research and it seems a pretty common way of putting on throttle bodies cheaply and apparently many dont need any extra management (stardard without AFM or something?) and if they do need management you can use something called Megasquirt that seems to be a cheap way of setting up the management yourself.

Found a few interesting things too like THIS ONE with a Honda using Suzuki GSX-R throttle bodies and THIS SITE with information on loads of different bike throttle bodies that could be used.

So its starting to look too easy. So if you get a cheap set on ebay that will not need expensive management with a similar spacing, diameter and get a machinest to make up a basic inlet manifold or something then that would be it pretty much?

Finally would it be possible at all to put them on an 8v gti and what sort of gains could be had?

It's easily done mate, lots of the Honda boys use the Fireblade ITBs with good results. As with most cars though you'd be better off getting some better cams etc before going down the ITB route.

Bill at Badger5 would be a good man to speak to as he is a dealer for Jenvey throttle boddies :)

the main cost of doing a TB setup is the wiring and ECU, the bodies themselves are not that dear - personally I would get car ones

inlet on the 8v is at the back of the engine iirc.is there room to get them on?

you can do but need a long-ish manifold - loads of people in the US have done this with bike TB's but they tend to be the sort who are top class fabricators, really nice egs on vortex from a few people but some have involved removal of scuttle etc to get some more room. Its possible to get webbers on an 8V so anything a webber will go on, a TB will also. Some people have had issues with heat soak from the exhaust screwing up the fuelling though so some heatshielding would be needed. A set of bike tbs will cost you at least £100. You are going to need a manifold....again at least £100-£150 unless you make it yourself. A set of purpose made car TB's is about £400......you gotta wonder if its worth the bother unless you are an ace fabricator and can make manifolds / brackets / throttle linkages etc yourself.

or the later 8v with front inlet ala beetle,or N/A 1.8 20V,more expensive but better gains?

I started to look into this nearly 2 years or more ago. Back then GSXR bodies were going for £50 and less, did a bit of research into finding out about getting the exact right spec bodies. Again, as stated fabricating a manifold bumped up the price a fair bit. Now every kit car mag in the world has done a series of articles on them and ebay is loaded with the things. 2 years plus ago you'd be lucky to find 1 set of suitable GSXR bodies a month. I actually bought some but have done nothing with them!

another option is to modify use old webber/dellorto carb casings

they too are getting common - hell i've got 2 sets in the shed

plus the bonus that most engines have a basic manifold already available from somewhere with minor fabrication for injectors etc - but in all fairness any pipes/brackets/fabrication needed i can do myself anyway

mmmm - now u got me thinking

Yeah your right, dont look like I have much space between engine and bulkhead but still seems an interesting project.
