Bit of an oil leak?!

Noticed this when I was giving my car a once over yesterday, never had any sort of oil leaks before but noticed this part of the gearbox is covered in oil. The oil is clean so I don't think it's engine oil, thinking its leaking out the gearbox, hoping someone can shed some light on the problem. I've cleaned a lot of the oil off and I'm gonna check it again tomorrow to see if I can identify where it is coming from. Anyone else had a problem like this before?
Car is an 07 FR TDI 88k.

This photo shows from the passenger wheel arch and the black cap seems to be mishaped, looks a bit strange.

looks like its been spraying rather than leaking. could just be oil thats been spilt whilst servicing, working its way round. maybe a leaking breather hose??
Oil leaks always look worse than they actually are.
I have came from owning Cosworths, the general rule was, if its not leaking...its empty

Well the underside of the car has always been clean and dry which is what's made me think it's a leak caused from somewhere. Just don't want the gearbox to go bang if all the oil leaked out.

Does it smell like gear oil? Gear oil Honk's. Failing that, clean it all off with some engine degreaser and check it after a drive to get a better idea where it's coming from.

I've never smelt gearbox oil before, the oil is pretty clean, not black as if it had came out the engine. I've cleaned it off best I could and im gonna check it again in a few days.
