Setting off on holiday next week, just thought I would do an adaptation of DSG gearbox, all done and going through final stage of the road test pattern - sharp braking followed by full throttle acceleration - 5 secs of full throttle, weird hissing noise then MASSIVE amounts of white smoke out the back....... Engine shut of damn quick. Pulled over. Checked dipstick - almost full. Restarted engine for 20 seconds tickover - stopped, dipstick halfway down.
I am assuming this is a blown turbo with oil seal failure leaking directly into exhaust?
If it leaked into inlet piping then wouldn't engine race with the extra "fuel"?

Anyway, looking for new turbo. 2.0 BKD 2005 engine, - any suggestions? Best I can get is about £300 reconditioned/remanufactured.
Any tips on replacement? |Getting new oil feed pipe. New return pipe as well? This is a much shorter thicker pipe so presumably can check if any blockage very easily?

Someone once said on this forum that replacing the turbo was easy - well I don't know what planet/drugs they were on. 3 hours on and haven't even started manifold nuts yet...
However what I have found is the intercooler is FULL of oil, about 2 litres. I have also found a few bits of alloy metal around the maf mesh one way and in the intercooler entrance pipe so I'm assuming the turbine has self destructed causing the oil leak. Hopefully due to the 10ft tortous journey the air inlet takes and the reservoir of oil in the intercooler, that none has found its way into the engine.

Looks as though i'm going to have to flush the interccoler with degreaser then detergent then steam clean it before putting her back together.

I wonder why the turbine blew on full throttle - overboost due to sooted up VNT perhaps?

Theyre a known weak point on the bkd, was it a kkk unit?

with a ramp you can have the job done and dusted within 3 hours ;)

Sorry to hear about the blow up!

Im concerned about my turbo too, car was in for a service a couple of weeks ago and the mechanic told me the turbo is leaking some oil.....not a massive amount...yet!! Ticking timebomb!

Maybe if you done it half a dozen times before, otherwise yer avin a larf
Add on 6 hours for thorough cleansing, deoiling and metal removal from whole intake system.
It was a Garret unit, looks like shaft sheared in half as the exhaust and inlet are moving independently. Inlet vanes burred down to small stumps :)
I've heard of this quite a few times before. Don't think it was oil feed problem, both inlet and outlet pipes clear. Most of engine oil was in the intercooler and intake pipework, so clearly flowing well. :) Started rebuild, hopefully thath will be a bit quicker!
Got a recon unit for £282, delivered next day.

Although my bkd turbo has not blown - I can recommend using a product available out there called 'revive' you spray it in using a fine mist dispensor into the intake past the MAF and it does clear some soot out of the turbo and vanes. Since te treatment on my turbo at 130k it has improved my economy and pick up so 50quid well spent so far...
2k miles on still good time will tell.
