Hi there Please Help I have a bmw 1 series 116i 2005 engine is fuc%ed due to timing chain stretching, was thinking of turning it into a project and having a go at fitting a 1.8 20v turbo engine, anyone clued up out there ie how hard would it be realistically? could it be done?
or what would be an easier alternative to get it back on the road, i don't want to fit or fix the 1.6 engine as this timing chain issue is a common fault
please any information grateful
thanks

Interesting idea.. allot of work maintaining the rear wheel drive, unless you can get a adaptor plate for the BMW box to the VAG engine..

If you really want a challenge the. Find a 4x4 Leon and transplant the entire running gear?

First 1.8t 4x4 1 series in the world?

If you've got either a **** load of fabrication and electrical skills, or a spare £20,000, then I'd say crack on. If you haven't got either of those, then I'd just stick to replacing the engine it came with.

Engine swaps are from years gone by imo. With all the electronics in new cars, just swapping a 1.6 BMW engine for a 2.0 BMW engine, would almost certainly be a complete nightmare. Let alone swapping between 2 completely unrelated manufacturers.

I agree with mty12345 think it's a very expensive and time consuming project with a lot of headaches in between but wish you the best of luck.
