Bocanegra Test Drive

The handling yes, the performance was hard to tell.

It just seemed a better, more solid and higher quality car. I think the problem with the Ibiza is that the main bulk of the cost is on the engine and the DSG so they have had to cut back a bit in other areas. It's not a bad car and it has great performance but the Renault just seems to be a better overall package.

At the end of the day it's just my opinion and we're all different. I didn't think for one second I'd want another make, let alone a Renault. Hence I ordered the Cupra back in June. If I hadn't had a rubbish test drive in the Boc first time round, I wouldn't have even tried anything else.

I'm still undecided and I secretly wanted to be disappointed by the Renault today but I wasn't. All I would say to anyone is "try both". Having now done quite a lot of research, all I do know is that I've yet to find a review that says the Cupra/Boc is better than the Renaultsport 200 Clio.

It wont be because I dont think it will be! if you buy the reno I really hope you dont pay any more than £3000 below list, cos they go for buttons at the moment.

Even though they are in direct comparison I think they will attract different people. The Clio is hardcore and the Cupra/Boc is a little softer with lower running costs etc.

Its a tricky one. I do think you'd have to modify the Ibiza to compete.

I'm really surprised you think the clio is better quality build wise too.

Have you seen the dash in the Ibiza? I think they took the plastic sample from my old K10 Micra.

By running costs what do you mean? Servicing & Parts? Or expected mpg?

Mardon, I don't know if you've seen the Clio in the flesh but I was really surprised by the quality. Bear in mind I'm talking about the Renaultsport 200 with a Cup chassis not the 200 Cup which is the stripped out version.

Mork is right, the dash in the Ibiza is very tacky and the way they've stuck the climate control in place of the air con knobs reminds me of when I fitted my own stereo in my first car. The whole thing just looks cheap.

Just had a look at the clio 200 now. Like the interior. Dont like the exterior face lift. May grow on me though.

Interesting thread non the less.

Knew you'd prefer the Cup if you took one out, and the opinion that Renaults are inferior build quality to Seats is distinctly out-of-date & incorrect now. The RenaultSports are great cars!

Before I changed to a RenaultSport I was just like you, of the opinion that it can't be better then a Seat Cupra but all it usually takes is one test-drive to put that notion to bed....;)

Buy the 200 mate - you won't regret it. If you want a decent price give Mike Griffiths at Lookers Chester a call.

You will be happy with the build quality because you will become used to it, and to be fair they dont rattle and squeak anymore. I just hope you are ready for the frustration of changing gears all the time with the n/a engine. the clio never suffered with lack of torque, my 197 pulled well at 30mph in 6th gear, its the lack of power!!! it revs, then revs then revs, all the noise....sounds awesome, but you just dont make much progress. You seriously do need a 24 hour test drive, and dare I say it plonk yourself on a dual carriageway slip road and thrape it up and down. You wont need to go on bendy roads because it goes without saying that aspect is 110%. if you can accept that the clio is ONLY a car for twisties then you will be fine. Please dont have the expectation that if a turbo diesel car with 150bhp or more is sat on your arse on a carriageway you will pull away from it because you wont. I had and a half years of kidding myself. It'll kill anything on the bends, but on the straights the gain you pulled will easily be lost. I know im nobody to you, but just read the evo test 197 vs vxr vs ibiza cupra vs mini CS. Bear in mind the 200 is only 2bhp more and no more torque. Just comes in lower down. the 197 didnt suffer with lack of torque it was a heavy car with maybe 185 bhp tops. Im sorry, they are gorgeous cars, i suppose its just what you want from it. I havent driven a new ibiza cupra so cant comment but if it comes down to looks, equipment and build quality the clio will have it (personally dont like the 200 facelift) but tunability, resale value and 'real world' accessable performance i dare say the ibiza. im gonna shut up now cos im looking anti clio. I loved mine, just frustrated the hell out of me that the engine let the whole package down

Once again all, cheers for the feedback. It's really useful. I'll be making my decision this weekend.

GazzFR, I take your point about the straights and I'll be an even bigger pain in the arse to my Renault dealer and take out another on the dual carraigeway (they've sold the one I went out in yesterday!). You say you 'loved' your Clio so I presume you've no longer got it - How did you find the residual value when you sold/part-exed it?

Trumpetman - I'll check out Mike Griffiths. I'll drag the Mrs out for a day in Chester on Sunday!! I'll tell her we're going shopping, she doesn't have to know it's for a car!!

If you get a move on he's got a black RS200 with Cup pack available at the moment....;)

Join the renaultsport forum and you can see all the best deals offered by specific dealers under a section there, well worth it if you're on the lookout for a RS of any description.

I traded it after 2 and a half years. had it from new. I paid 13K (£2995) below list standard. I then had metallic paint, folding mirrors and rear tints in at that price too. Which is why I said you gotta pay 3k less than list! I did 23k miles and got £9700. Bear in mind if you pay list for a basic car which is around £16250....thats a major loss. When you go on the test drive, sit at around 75-80mph and then floor it in 6th... it'll pull nicely, but just see how long it is before you drop to 5th, then 4th, then even 3rd before you think "god this shifts!" if you are happy doing that, then you mayaswell sign on the dotted line!

I'm on my second RS (had a 197 & currently run an r26), and have a cupra on order. It depends what you want out of your car. I think the cupra will be more comfortable, and a better proposition for the daily work commute. But the renault the better track day car. The main reason I'm changing is to reduce my running costs, and I want a car that's easier in stop start traffic (which I spend a lot of time in), but still can raise a smile from time to time. The RS cars definately have better brakes (4 pot brembo's, drilled discs etc), in comparrision the cupra's look pretty poor. On the other hand my megane's been a disaster in terms of reliability and has spent nearly as much time in the garage as out of it (another reason I'm switching brands). I know all manufacturers have their problems but I'm hoping a VAG group car fares a little better. It's horses for courses really, get the car you like the best. You can always get rid if you don't like it.

If you want you can spend £1150 on some nice seat sport (Ap racing) 4 pot's for the cupra. I can vouch for them as I have them on my heavier TDI Cupra and they are awesome!!

The comfy drive, auto and fuel consumption will be the reasons for me getting the new cupra. Oh and the fact the car looks sweet!!

What I really respect about Renault is the fact that in one sense they make a car for the masses in terms of the DCi models, but then they don't forget there are people on the other end of the scale, and produce stuff for Joe Public like THIS. I know the Clio Cup wouldn't suit everyone, but it's an intent to offer something more hardcore for the real enthusiast. Easily done as they run Clio Cup cars, but at least they are trying to offer something more than the watered down $h1t we get offered in the VAG community.

not having seen either in the flesh, is the extra 700 quid or so worth it for the black front etc over the cupra in peoples opinion?

I'd say yes for the exclusive factor. It does look classy. You also get all black versions of which ever headlights you choose, mock carbon fibre trim in the cabin and different seat covers. Oh and titanium alloys rather than standard silver.
