currently hull, then brighton!
Hi all,

Recently i fitted an ATP manifild and in the first 300 miles i never opened it up but after that i started to try it out, seemed great loadsa torque boost was ok but i never booted it for longer that 1 or 2 gears.
i am now now 1000 miles in and the turbo is behaving erratically, it will boost very late on occasions with a big surge then drops out before i let go of the accellerator. after accelerating hard through just 1st 2nd 3rd then trying another run the turbo seems to be runnng at 50% just wont give me power,
unfortunately i do not have VAG com, and wouldnt know what to look for anyway. does anyone else have any ideas??

thanks for the comments guys,

it certainly is a strange one, and i do not know what is causing it a base level.

I was driving up to hull today (280) miles and was cruising at around 3500 rpm in 6th when i felt a disturbing rapid on/off power fluctuation, it was as if there was a problem with the injectors or the fuel pump, thought i was breaking down, i just pullled into the inside lane and crept along at 60mph until i go to hull.

not good. but hopefully VAG com can pick it up.

I may have to search for somewhere up here to look at it....... bugger

thanks again guys,

i'm pretty sure that all the bolts are tight and connections are good, i have wondered whether i need to revise my REVO settings but didn't think i would see such drastic issues, i have to get it back to JKM to have a look, as far as the N75 valve is concerned, i have seen lots of people talking about this on other threads, i still do not know what it is so i will go find out and will suggest it to my garage.

Cars, who'd ave em eh

N75 is what controls the wastegate which obviously controls boost! With the highflow manifold boost should build quickier, which may be putting it in limp mode by overboosting! Try reducing the Boost settings in Revo and do a throttle body alignment to let it adapt properly. Then slowly up the boost after that and see what happens!

Might just need time to adapt as you have been just pootling around it has adapted to suit! You should have just booted it from the off! It's only a manifold!!

Don't rule out a problem though!

Did you resolve this issue, Charlie?

I discovered it had a split intercooler pipe, JKM replaced it, it drove great for 300 miles, then started losing its guts again. :( but this time the pipes are fine.

Its been in and out of JKM motor services like no-ones business, we are putting it on the rollers on saturday and will see if it plays up at all.

I am certainly confused over this one, if you are out and about in the cool (say 15 degrees or less) and its only just got to normal engine temp, if you put your foot down its goes like a rocket, but try the same after a long drive when its warmed up then you will have a different result, sometimes the turbo whistle is so quiet it can hardly be heard, on other occasions its blatently boosting well, but not predictably.

Sound like heat soak doesnt it.

But inlet temps are very low so the intercooler is definately doing its job.

going to try my stock DV tomorrow, this is turning into a pain in the arse, and it hasnt really played up for the guys in the garage as they cant drive it all day so they have no idea either.

Sadly, its ths sort of thing that changes your level of interest in modding.

Charlie, have you reset the ECU and given the car a damn good thrashing? Next time you're in JKM get Jim to do a TBA and a full ECU reset. What timing and boost are you running? Tried another N75 valve yet?

Hi martyn,

I cant remember where we left the settings last time, i think it was timing 6 boost 6 (maybe 7) but i really am unsure, i know diddlysquat about VAG com.

I will get Jim to do as you suggested, i gather this is more than just pulling and reapplying the power, as i have done that quite a lot recently!

Cheers

hi mate - Jim mentioned your issue you were having. Will be interesting to see how badly its affecting your car on the RR on saturday - can compare it to mine as we have very similar spec'd cars.

I'm sure Jim etc can do the TBA and full ECU reset - I have VAG-COM and could do it for you if not... but u'll need to let me know in advance so i bring the lappy down with me. My SPS3 will be with me too, no doubt, but this won't affect your RR results anyway. (So i'm told)

Your timing and boost will be set with the SPS - and i expect you'll find you had it set to what seems to be the standard 6 timing, 7 boost, for the time being, until you were happy to have a play with the sps and vag-com.

Surely ECU reset is just disconnecting the battery, and once reconnected if ignition is switched on with bonnet open the car will automatically do a TBA? Don't need VAG-COM for that....???

bit of a wild card here but my car felt exactly like that today when i had a coil pack go. it was misfiring all over the show...from past experiance with my ibiza cupra misfires (coilpacks)dont always bring up CEL either.

just a thought

Hi Paul,

yea, as you say they are very similar and i have been told on so many occasions by Jim that the car is lacking torque compared to other cupras,
I suppose even though we have virtually identical mods there can be these varying tolerance between engines.

i have no idea what i would be looking at with VAG com, but thats just ignorance really, i work in technology so should really familiarise myself, might spend less time feeling clueless that way.

Bring it along if its not too much trouble man.

Its casting a cloud over my RR day, i wanted the car to be running sweet.
i will get there and put mine on once it has cooled so that i can see the fault take place.

Grumble Grumble Grumble

Strange you should mention that, but i know thats not whats happening this time.

this did happen though on the day i got my Revo trial, i ended up going home with the coil packs from one of the mechanics cars, and he got a lift home!

they just died on the first trial!

the fluctuations you mention do sound a fair bit like my n75 failure I had a while back, but i wouldnt say it made THAT much difference - u could feel it but i don't think it was as bad as what you seem to be getting.

But I'll try and bring the lappy and vag-com lead along, just in case Jim is real busy with the RR day.

I reckon we may be looking a one or two things in conjunction here, items that are not broken just operating badly, maybe the N75 and something else? really hard to diagnose though.

oh well, thats it for this evo my eyes have dried up :sleepy:
