Just had my Leon Cupra serviced and been told that I need new rear brake calipers as they can no longer be adjusted to reduce the handbrake travel. I was under the impression that this adjustment was done behind the handbrake handle itself, not the calipers. Also, the handbrake has been tightened up anyway so now not certain this needs doing.

Has anyone else needed these changing for this reason before, or even sound familiar?

The rear calipers automatically adjust themselves to keep the handbrake travel to a few clicks. The adjustment behind the handbrake lever is to even up the pull between left and right and to compensate for cable stretch.

The automatic adjustment system does sometimes seize, and this can require a caliper rebuild.

The weird thing is they adjusted the handbrake to just a couple of clicks anyway and the brakes are working fine... Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get them changed at some point in the future then.

Cheers!

If you were to fit new pads and discs (if required) then the adjustment would start again due to the reduced gap. Maybe its just the handbrake cable that needs replaced!!

Sounds a bit strange, the handbrake on a used cable should be about 5 or 6 clicks and if it holds the car then should be fine but before spending money I would take it back and ask them to show what they meant by this............. As mentioned it could just be a simple change of brake pads
