After investigating a metalic clunking noise from my driver side suspension area today I noticed that my coil spring had snapped  (only done 25k as well so a bit mythed TBH :wtf: ).

Anyways needs to get sorted for MOT next month but I had a few quick questions:

1). should I replace both or just the broken one (will just replacing one mess op handling??).

2). Is it safe to drive for the next 2 weeks until the MOT (I do about 20 miles a day mostly urban roads).

3). Anyone know how much the part is?

Cheers :worship:

i wouldnt drive anywhere with a broken coilspring.

as to replacing its probably better to replace both in my opinion, some peoples opinion may differ.

Jesus didn't know it was this bad. Will get it done at weekend.

Anyone know where a good online supplier of Eibach's or H&R springs are at?

Cheers all

star performance seem very popular north of the border.i wouldn't even drive it anywhere like that.its going to effect handling and braking performance, just imagine the safety implications

....ah well, the old problems come around.......

Just looked at the GFs TDI110 after she reported a knocking noise last night after driving 240 miles back from Hudersfield to Plymouth. Checked it out today (drivers side) and found the suspension spring snapped about 4" from the end.

So I guess its off to stealers tomorrow for a pair, and then find a cheaper garage to install...............

Anyone know cost of a pair of std springs ???

Looks like this problem got more popular in March 2006, hope I dont start a new 2007 trend now !!!!

The spring on mine was £60. I just changed one side as the car had only done 28k and the garage figured the other side was OK.

Downside was that they busted the ABS sensor on the way off - £80 for the part - bummer.

Yep - Seat want £60 per spring !!!!!

And they wanted (but arent getting) £110 to fit !!!!!

So if we'd wanted both springs replacing that would cost £340 !?!?!?!?!?

However even they stated that the springs are matched so closely (hence all the colour coding varieties) that fitting just one side would be un-noticeable. 2 garages after this confirmed that would be ok, although both suggested the pair as the best route. However its a 110SE, driven 'normally' by the GF - and she really isnt going to know.

By the way, the other garage will charge £50 to fit.

I've just had a broken coil spring on the drivers side diagnosed. The car did feel odd and there was an annoying rattling when going over uneven ground. These things always seem to happen when you buy something else.

The guy at the dealers said that if it was his car he would not drive it.

Seems to be an issue with the S3 as well.

Metal clunking noise front drivers side suspension on my car also turned out to be a broken coil spring.

The garage said it was ok for limited driving and got it sorted for £90 all in for a new coil spring and labour and vat.

I had to have a new coil spring fitted to LC after hitting a pot hole and having it snap. Took it to the garage and i think it cost about £120 in total but they fitted a euro part instead of a Seat spring so the part numbers were the same but the size of the spring was different, took it back there because it was still making the noise they fitted a Seat spring to it and its as been fine and i haven't noticed any difference in handling by just having the one side done.

If the same scenario happens to me, I probably call my dealer to order for some replacements right away.

i bought mine with a broken spring, and i also drove it a few hundred miles on said broken spring, including a trip to germany ;)

but it wasn't very clever, and the shock went soon after i replaced the springs, so i suspect the 2 things were related.

get it done asap
