Got a funny email the other day which may be of benefit to us.

Basically, if I can get this DRL setup (BTCC or non-BTCC) made for us in such a way that all we need to do is drill holes for a plug-and-play, CAN-BUS friendly and LEON-specific DRL harness...
what would a decent price bracket be that we are willing to pay for said pre-made solution?

This wouldn't be some dude in a basement piecing these together btw. It would include any plastic moulding, lights, circuitry, connections and credentials required.

Nice :) would it include the side vents with it already fitted or an attachment to go onto the original vents?

If i did include the side vents with the led lights already intalled in them (All you have to do is install the new side vents with the lights in and plug and play) I would be interested =]

I suppose either option is possible. It would be cheaper to manufacture a "back plate", where you would need to drill the holes and glue it on.
But if they have the capability to produce the actual vent moulds...why not?!
It would just cost more.
Granted, it'll be produced in China so...low manufacturing costs in bulk.

It was a totally unsolicited and random approach by a manufacturer to me personally...the stars must be aligned or something so I figure I'd ride the wave.

Sent a request for some info on if they can build this stuff, what minimum orders are etc etc..typical businessy crap along with some design questions.

I would defiantly be Interested. Either way. If its vent included or not. Be good to get a price for both ways and see how much it would be :)
Been wanting someone to do this since I got the car :)

yeah this ain't gonn' fly.
Min order 500 pieces to start.
30% deposit upfront for tooling (makes sense..gotta set up the machines)
30% pay on acceptance of the sample/prototype
40% pay BEFORE initial shipment.
At least they're generous in saying that at 20k units, I'll get the tooling costs back. Bit of good-will if anything.

So basically, my guess is I'd have to put down about 5 to 8k in tooling alone since we'd be looking at setting up their machines for 2 moulds (pre-FL, pre-FL BTCC).
Production costs would be (best guess) about 12-15 pounds per unit.

So I'd need about 3500 down payment, another 3500 for the sample and then another 4500 or so on delivery of the first (?) 500 units...of which we MIGHT shift 100 :)

So in conclusion....case of thanks but no thanks.

good news is...they CAN easily do this. So if anybody is willing to invest, I'm happy to join in :) It would have to be across many cars though, and possibly into other brands (Civics/Clios etc)

With SMD connectors so that they can be replaced!

Good luck!....what are those black covers you are using for the back of the smd's?....got a link?

Ta

Thanks!!
I'm pretty sure i'll need your help at some point! haha

Speaking of which...
Did you fit the 6 SMDs in the vent holes provided? Or did you drill it all out and make your own holes? I can't seem to find sold way to symmetrically get 6 in

The connectors are off eBay from a guy called "begoniasale".
10PCS Socket Xenon LED Light Bulb Car Truck Connector T10/W5W/194/168/T15

I wanted them because I want the housing separate from the electronics. Comes from my software development background :)
Then gonna get some 1/2 inch long tubes, attach the cAbochons to the end, and the other end to the connector.

I'll document it all :)

I used the existing holes. The only one where there is a slight overlap is the second from the top as the gap is about 8mm where all the others are bigger.

Will have a look on eBay as they look interesting. Also thinking of plastic welding too as this may be better!

Just thought I'd post my latest design/progress.
The biggest missing thing is a way to connect my lighting assemblies to the backplate.
I'm open to suggestions from the more technically inclined.

So the backplate attaches to the vent via the original screw holes. So the vents stay OEM.
Makes the system removable on sale, and moveable to another car :)
Also, it makes it a lot easier to fit to say a non-BTCC car. Or any car for that matter. The only thing that would need changing is the back plate, which is the easiest part.
