I want a change from my current car (a Corsa B) and fancy something a bit more grown up, so I'm looking at one of these today, I've done a bit of reading up on the forum but what specifics should I look for? Water in the footwells, windows, clutch biting point, gearbox, handling etc.

Its a 1.8SE, 99 V-reg, MOT'd until December, mileage isn't listed which is a worry along with partial service history. Looks very tidy and cared for in the photos though, and says its had recent cambelt change. Its been offered to me for £650.

well unless its starship mileage, and it runs and don't have that many odd noises it sounds a bargain.

Yep, what he said. For that price I'd just buy it and put some money aside for any problems you might find. Just check it starts and drives straight, and got four good tyres.

If it's had a recent cambelt change, then I reckon mileage will be anywhere between 80 and 100K.

125 BHp from the non-turbo 1.8 so not too shabby really.

But mated to a heavish body and its a revvy engine with little low down torque.

10V V5 is a nice torquey engine that suits the car well, my Golf V5 estate was a pleasure to drive along the twisty coastal roads of cornwall for 2 years running;)

The above link is a much better spec too

That V5 is a lot of motor for the money!

Shame about the fuel consumption, insurance and road tax though!

I used to get low 30s from mine, mid 30s on a motorway cruise - I rarely drive in towns though

Insurance - I'm old so its cheap, picking a car that boy racers avoid is good for premiums on the whole for young and old

pre 2001 so its the same as 1.8? £245
