Earlier this year, a friend of mine got quotes from independent VAG specialists for cambelt and waterpump and they weren't that far off the SEAT dealer price. The SEAT dealer price was a no brainer in the end because of the 5 year warranty.

It's definitively recommended to replace them every 5 years, but not sure of the mileage.

I've heard of some main dealers price matching local independents if they are within a couple of miles to them.

I'd get some quotes from local vag specialists then take it to the main dealers in person and speak to a manager and see if they will price match.

With things how they currently are I'm sure they wouldn't be turning business away and the worst they can say is no, so no harm in asking.
