Can I put water in my coolant reservoir in my MK2 TDi?

I am losing coolant somewhere in my system and my car is booked to go to get looked at tomorrow morning, but I only have dregs of coolant left in the reservoir and I have no coolant left.

Am I able to safely put water in the coolant reservoir as a temporary measure to get to the garage safely?

As a late contribution, the classic roadside remedy was to use urine, so clean water will be fine. It just doesn't contain the lubricants, anti-corrosion and anti-freeze properties.
