Air mass changed now . Still have troubles . Car now starts , but struggles . Coil packs borrowed from someone so I can rule them out .
Car wants to still stall when first started . Have to give it some beans to keep it going . Pops bangs and farts on let off. Let go of the throttle and it goes to stall again . Let go of it gradually and it goes to iddle ok .
Does really need to go to a garage for a full check , but don't dare drive it . Again any help please . Vag com not pulling no codes now , as I cleared them when done the maf . Let it tick over for a good 1.5 hrs , but still no codes .

Have you removed and cleaned the throttle body?

have you changed the crank position sensor ?

Can you borrow a throttle body and substitue it as a test?

Haven't changed either of them . Just trying to sort what the fault could be without changing 100's of bits . Someone had said it could be a air leak , another - water in a fuse , fuel starvation .
To reset the tb , do I have to use vag com ( this seems to be a never ending dissuasion if you need to or not ) . I'll have a go at pulling the tb off tomorrow . See if its full of crap .

I didn't bother with a reset and it's been fine.

popping and banging, most likely fueling or ign...

failing crank trigger could result in mis timed ign = pops and bangs
lean running also could result in lean misfire popping thru intake.. pipe off inlet can cause this..

Ok....... I've took off the tb. All cleaned and re set by vag com . That's the free job out the way , but hasn't cured it. I've been out and brought a crank sensor today ( well 2 .1with a short lead and 1 with a long lead as not sure which I've got ) .
Does anyone know where this Is located in the engine bay ?
Also if car is running lean , how can I alter this .

Thanks for all the help so far guys. :)

Failing that ........... beneath a rubber or plastic bung on the gearbox , situated where the clutch fly wheel is located ie close to joint with engine block.

depends on which gearbox version you have apparently as to wether it is on the engine block next to rear of the fly wheel or on gear box next to front of fly wheel .

Hi guys .
Back again !!! Running out of ideas now . Crank sensor changed , all pipes checked for splits , tb cleaned out again , plugs and coils checked...... Still not running right .
Seems to be struggling to keep going . Idles fine for a min or 2 then goes to stall. If I hold the revs at 3k for example , it will go there , then without moving my foot it will drop on its own to almost stall then jump back up again . Hard to explain .
Would the cam sensor have anything to do with this ? Vag com is showing that temp is sitting at 71 after a hour of running . I know this won't help and I'll get one tomorrow , but would this cause this odd behaviour ?
At wits end now as the mrs needs the car to get to work .

Again any help is appreciated .

John

Suggest consider :-

spark plug insulator or tip failure

oil in spark plug well from leaking gasget

loose spark plug allowing gas blow by up the threads and a consequent loss of circuit earth for plug ( typically misfires as revs rise )

Cam position sensor

exhaust gas sensor

engine knock sensor

coolant temp sensor

boost pressure sensor

Throttle pedal fly by wire throttle position sensor

water in fuel pump relay ( leak down wiring loom from wiper scuttle)

water in injector relay ( ditto )

replace fuel filter ( under car by back wheel ............ Take great care if doing it ones self ........ extreme risk of fire )

Check fuel pump output pressure ( after filter change )

Wiring loom to coil packs that runs ontop of rocker cover ( can be changed seperate to rest of loom ) can get cracks in insulation and short on rocker cover.

Pcv valve ( located under inlet manifold) located where the large and small pipe meet. The disc in the valve can break up or stick open allowing to much air to pass = weak mixture (test by clamping hose shut after valve with mole grips )

Broken dipstick tube ( this allows the pvc to vent to atmosphere causing a weak mixture again )

Fuel tank breather blocked ? ( remove fuel tank cap after revs drop and see if improves situation )

control solenoid for VVT

secondary air pump and / or solenoid malfunction ( normally throws eml )

Any codes showing now?
