I pay £0 car tax.

At least if the roads don't get fixed I can be less arsed about it :D

My 'y' Cupra was (near enough) £150 for 6 months, £270 year...?
I didn't think that was any different to last time.

I wonder how much I pay the government for the luxury of driving, eh?
£0.80 litre up to £1.40 ish - now about £300 a month
£150 Road tax every 6 months
Vat on car parts
'Premium tax' on insurance,

And for what....!?!?

Thieving b457ards!

Made in Spain, made better in England;) 223.3hp 263.8lbft

For the amount of tax we all pay, they cant even maintain the up keep of our roads. So why the f*** are they eg widening the M1. Get the roads into a decent state before chucking ludicrous amounts of cash in adding extra lanes to motorways. IMO

Mine was £270 a couple of months ago, up from £260 the year before IIRC. Inevitable isn't it, the government know that most motorists fall into the unfortunate band of people that aren't so poor to be on the bread line but aren't super rich. So they know they can tax the **** out of us because we will pay, due to lack of decent alternative modes of transport if nothing else.

Up here a fair proportion of the roads are in a truly ridiculous state, especially round town. There's no doubt the unusually bad winters the last 2 - 3 years and the accompanying tons of salt have been hard on them but they never do very much to fix them in the summer time! If they do, the repairs are of poor quality and just crumble again the next winter, leaving even deeper potholes (I think by definition they should be called craters or chasms).

Typical government attitude, spend as little money as possible now papering over the cracks instead of investing long term and getting a lasting product.

Rant over

p.s. I wonder how much tax some of you boys would have to pay if it was actual CO2 emissions and not what it was on a runway with eco tyres, no seats, a tablespoon of fuel, taped panel gaps and a tailwind?!

IMO car tax should be scrapped and put on fuel duty instead.
That way it would be based on your mileage, which I think would be fairer.

I don't do many miles a year, but I'm paying the same car tax as someone who does 40K. How can that be fair?

PS. Car tax doesn't go towards repairing the roads. Just goes in the pot with all the other taxes.

Yeah I know it just goes in the pot with the rest of our hard earned cash but the whole justification for road tax is that it is required to maintain the roads.

One thing is for sure and that is that Road Tax (Road Fund Licence, or whatever they call it now) will increase every year, basically it's a way to make it look like the government are actually concerned with the welfare of the planet by taxing higher CO2 cars, when in reality it's just a nice excuse to hide behind the obvious facts that they just want more and more money from the motorist.

If they really cared that much about the harmful gasses damaging the planet then the money we all pay into car tax would surely be used more wisely and efforts would be made to find a viable clean alternative (Won't ever happen because then how can they justify high taxes on something that is planet friendly!!!) This rant is starting to relate to another thread I saw on here regarding conspiracy theories lol

Current tax prices for all vehicles as of 1st April this year https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables as before vehicles registered before 1st March 2001 are calculated on engine size, over 1549cc is £220, under 1549cc is £140 for 12 months.

My advice is lets all go out and buy Mazda RX7's running 400bhp, £140 a year tax doesn't seem too bad then :)

its not far off that now really, as the average user pays more in fuel duty/vat than they do on road tax each year:
average mileage is now nearer 14k i understand. lets say at 30mpg.
over the year thats 467 gallons costing around £2,925 (at 137.8 per litre).

of which about £1,700 will be tax, - be it fuel duty or VAT.

So if you drive more, then you pay more, if you have a car that gives better mpg you pay less.
However i do understand that looking at this is simple terms why not scrap road tax and just add 10p to fuel duty..
Couple of things i believe.
1: road tax is a good way of keeping car data up to date and for policing of vehicles. Road tax was a quick way to monitor if a car was being kept on the road legally. However, this is changing as now with insurance etc able to be checked in seconds then this control aspect applies less.
2: Road tax has more of an effect on peoples influence when chooses a car to buy than mpg does. Strange but true.
3: it also means where people own more than one car they pay more than would otherwise be.

But it does mean owning a weekend car is expensive as you tax a car for the year and use it 25 times a year at weekends when the weather is nice.

Car tax should be re named government piggy bank....wtf is going on some cars now free but still weight 1200/1400 kilos still helping making potholes...... Come on government sort it out back like the old days or did it use to work to good and fair for it to be kept..
Up to a 1.6 £120 per year
Up to a 2.0 £140 per year
Up to a 2.5 £160 per year
Any car above 2.5 or any 4x4 £190 per year....
And so on...
It gets me but some people who live in secluded areas need 4x4 to get out when the bad weathers approach us but they get hammered big time.....
No wonder LCR are getting broke so much with the running costs I might be going back to a diesel myself as can't be arsed with fuel and tax....my jdm subaru 3 yrs back was £180 per year running 460hp......
If the working man gets more £££ notes to spend just maybe the country wouldn't have so much debts...

Well then, you or your work should pay more for using the roads more. That's fair, isn't it?

No, cause Iam paying more then my fair share in fuel duty. My diesel isn't cover by work, it comes out of my own money

The more you drive the more 40% duty you pay, that is pay as you use.

If you went to Alton towers they wouldn't charge you a lower entrance fee cause you want to go on 1 ride

A compromise would be 5p on fuel, halving the road tax and a guarantee that all the road tax would be spent on the road network instead of councils having to pay for pothole repairs and all the insurance claims they now have to cover.

Car tax can **** right off!!!!! Straight sending a bill to the local council for a nd ****ing alloy!! Like a ******* mine field! Wondered why my steering was ****ed.

Right pissed me off. Might drive around with no tax and my alloy in the boot. N when I get pulled just show them this is why I ain't paying it! Lol
