Hi

I've just picked up my double din facia and a LinITX touch screen 7" monitor

Has anyone done an install with one of these?
when i hold the shroud up against the facia it seems too big
and when i hold the monitor against it, it looks a bit tall

i'll post some pics when i get chance

you can see what i mean by it being that little bit too high,

Thanks pabs i've seen your site, was on there earlier trying to figure it out
I've been on mp3car and the uk version of it,
I know i have to take the front off the screen and try and mount it in the facia, but i'm a bit stuck now i know its too tall

any ideas what i should do?

to explain a bit - the screen HAS to be mounted from the rear of the facia. You don't "need" to see or be able to get to the edge of the screen housing - the actual 7" diagonal screen, + buttons at the bottom is all you need to get access to.

was just gonna add - why not mount it from behind ?

yeah i planned to mount it from behind, i just took the pics like that so you could see it better

the problem is i wanted the screen to sit flush, but with out cutting the current screen facing and the facia, i think it will be really difficult

Yeah pabs, i did read the guide, even considered getting a Xenarc 700TSV 7" LCD as it seems to fit better

how much you reckon i could get one for 2nd hand

I sold my Xenarc in its current modded state for over £150. They retail at about £230 new i think.

Personally, i woudn't bother swapping - i don't think theres much difference in size at all - mine looked like a sh*te fit until i started cutting away at little pieces here and there....

If i was to do it again I'd get a motorised in-dash fold-away jobbie - that way the dash doesnt need to be modified. However I'm not sure how reliable they are these days... lots of problems when i was looking at them

nope - all removed now.

Too much hassle in the end - hard drives and vibrations/pot-holes don't mix - I kept getting BSOD's (Blue screen of deaths) - and there was also the issue of loud music getting stuck in a loop when the PC did blue screen....

I do miss it - the sat-nav/mp3/dvd/divx/wifi that it gave me was awesome, but just a lot of space required and a lot of messing around to get it to work 100% spot on.

Good luck with yours tho - love to see the results!

Thats a shame mate after all the money you spent out, I've read your posts on MP3Car too.

I've been pondering over the volume issue, i like having a knob to control the volume, and i dont really want to do it on a touch screen.

So were the blue screens caused by a combination of hard drive and pot holes?
was the HD a desktop one or a Laptop?
I wanted

I'm a software engineer so know a thing or 2 about computers, was even thinking of developing my own interface but the ones that are out there seem pretty good.

The amp issue is going to be a pain, if i could install the computer in the front of the car it wouldn't be too bad, but because of space etc its looking like the boot is the only option, problem with that is i need loads of cable, ones for speakers and antenna etc

headwork!

yep - welcome to my 2yrs of work on a carPC !

I used RoadRunner F/E, as it was by far the best/easiest to use IMO. Worked really well.

BSOD's were just due to vibrations/knocks IMO. I had a laptop hdd because a 3.5" would definately not take the environment (I tried) - but even the laptop hdd struggled. I started to move over to solid-state CF cards, but you can't (or at least couldnt) boot directly from the CF slot on the mobo. Then i tried a basic O/S on CD, so no hdd, and that didnt work too well either, unless you were stationary when you switched it on. And then the boot time was too long.

I eventually got my PC to go in/out of hibernation in about 15seconds - which was pretty good.

I spent ages making the boot sequence quicker, removing bits from windows to make it more stable/quicker etc.

I used a 6 channel JBL amp - 4 channels for the individual car speakers, and 2 channels for Subs in the boot. (or 1 x bridged sub) - worked well, and u could get a remote lead for it to control volume in the car, but i just couldnt get hold of one.

Just gave up in the end. Sold for a slight loss, but i had fun so no worries there.

Mine all went into the boot - with very long leads running down either side of the car (keeping phono's away from the power leads etc, shielding)

Software engineer!!!??? I've seen you in work, you just sit there drinking tea!!

I had problems with HD + pothole combination. I had my HD in a cradle thing though so it used to bounce around, fixed it more securly and all is good now.

i actually had mine on a spring/type caddy.. helped, but still tricky.
You need to mount your hdd VERTICALLY, so that the bumps do not bang the hdd head on the platter.

So its in the same plane (or is it plaine?) as the wheels.

Just go solid state mate - much less of a power draw, much more reliable, and smaller too!

lethargic has built one in his ibiza which looks mint, so i'll probably pick his brains on the moulding issues,
At least the facia is only about £15, if i **** it up i'll just get a new one
