Hi All,

I have a re-mapped engine.. running 144BHP from 90 stock..

Recently, i have noticed my engine all has started to drop (as it should from normal use x2)
I know my engine takes 5W-30 Oil.

I am not sure what oil was put in at my last service (at a guess Castrol).

Is it OK to buy a litre of 5W-30 engine oil (any brand?) and simply top up?

Also after how many miles does OIL FILTER, AIR FILTER, FUEL FILTER require changing?

Also is their any performance oil anyone recommends  ?

For top ups, I just put in whatever is laying around as long as it's the right viscosity. I'm sure a garage would do the same when topping it up. Not sure on that engine type, but generally mapped cars are recommended to move to 5W-40 if the engine is burning off oil.

Fuel filter on a petrol is supposed to be life. I define life as 100k or 10 years (whichever comes first). Oil filter I'd do yearly with the service, same as air filter. You could get both for under a tenner. I use Millers Nanodrive. Fuchs is also good. Failing that Castrol Edge.

Look up your the VAG oil spec for your car (you can get it easily by putting your reg no into an oil finder (I like Opie's as that's where I buy my oil). For my 2016 CHZB engined Ibiza its a 5W-30 to VW 504. So any brand that complies with that spec would be safe although I'm a bit "anal" about this sort of thing and like to stick with what I've already put in at the oil change to avoid any possible weakening of additive package strength. The fixed/yearly interval service - I don't "do" extended service intervals - recommendation for my engine is a 5W-40 to VW 502. The "40" figure in the SAE spec (5W-40) means that it will be a little more viscous at working temperature so might cut oil consumption a little.

I'm about to do the first service on my Ibiza now it's out of warranty. The dealer tells me it's been filled with Castrol whilst it was serviced by them during the warranty period so my inclination was to carry on with their Edge Titanium 5w-30 LL but the quoted service oil fill is 4 litres and Castrol supply in 4 litre containers so leaving nothing for the occasional top up or a wee bit for doing door hinges, locks, and other. I've used Fuchs on many occasions - both the family Fiats are running on that brand at this minute - and they supply their Titan GT1 Pro C-3 SAE 5W-30 XTL (what a handle!) which is VW 504 compliant in 5 litre containers and at roughly the same price as Castrols "premium brand" price for their 4 litres. After havering over this for some time I've decided, last night, to go with the Fuchs! During my investigations I've discovered a lot about Fuchs I didn't previously know and it's impressed me deeply. One of these facts, which I haven't investigated in great depth because at this time it's not relevant, is that they do their "Race Pro" range. This might interest you as I think it uses a very sophisticated base oil - Ester?) and is particularly aimed at high performance engines. Try asking Opie about it either, on line or give them a ring, I find them very approachable and knowledgeable.

As said above I would do an air and oil filter every year - you might get away with every second year with the air filter if you don't do many miles - as I'm only doing 5 to 6,000 miles a year now I'm thinking about this - but do the oil filter every time you change the oil. I was surprised to find there is no recommended interval for the fuel filter. My local indy actually said to me "If it's not leaking just leave it alone"! I'm not all that happy with this so think I'll be changing mine every 5 years when the cam belt gets changed. It looks easy enough to do (the filter that is) just some plastic unions to compress and pull off. I believe the unions are not available separately so be a little careful when compressing as you have to renew the whole fuel line if you break/damage a clip.

Hi,
First off Thankyou for your responce. As its always appreciated.
Please see below

UPDATE:
I ended up buying Castrol 5w 30 Oil (engine bay reccomended) and procedded to top up engine oil as normal.

Two weeks later I had the 'Oil Servce' notification when i start my ignition..
I am aware this happens to remind you for a service every 10,000miles

As I have not changed my Oil Filter i am looking to buy one and do FULL oil change (inc filter ofc)
So... my questions are:
What is the best/recommened brand oil filter?
Is there an online guide on how to do this as am not a mechanic?
What should i be careful for?
How much oil does the 90BHP 2016 1.2 Seat Ibiza hold?

Kind regards,

Regarding the "OIL SERVICE" display on your dashboard. If you look further down in this section you'll find my thread "Getting to know Twinkle" in which I explain the procedure I followed to reset this notification.

Best/recommended oil filter? don't skimp on this a cheap or counterfeit oil filter could cost you dear. I suppose the obvious answer would be to buy a genuine VAG filter but I've used Mahle filters for many years and they are original equipment quality certified - never had a problem. Find yourself a local factor - not a corner shop type accessory shop but a proper trade outlet which garages in your area are buying from - it's unlikely they will sell anything "dodgy".

On line guide? almost certainly but I've never looked for one.

What should you be careful of? You'll almost certainly have a cast aluminium sump? DON'T OVERTIGHTEN THE DRAIN PLUG. It's very possible to strip out the threads! If you do some may tell you you need to fit an entire new sump (deep pockets needed to go that route!) There are options though which retain the old sump. Installing a Helicoil thread insert or drilling out the stripped hole and re-tapping it to take a larger plug. Much much better though to just not strip it in the first place so, if you are inexperienced and don't have the mechanic's "magic feely hands" I strongly recommend you invest in a torque wrench and tighten it to the correct torque for your engine (30 Newton Meters on my 95hp 1.0 3 cylinder)

How much oil to buy? I don't know for your car but if you buy a 5 litre container you will have plenty with some left over for topping up later if needed. This is actually what put me off the Castrol, which in all other respects is an excellent choice. They are now supplying in 4 litre containers which is exactly what mine takes on a "service refill" (and I can confirm to be the case having done it). I queried them about it and they answered that so many cars now have quite small sumps that the smaller pack size saves waste when people throw away the remains of the 5 litres they don't use - which is fair enough if your car has one of these smaller sumps. In the end I bought 5 litres of Fuchs Titan GT1 Pro C3 5w-30 which is a fully VW 504 certified product.

Feed your car details into "Opie Oils" website and you'll see their recommendations - they sell filters etc too and are a company you can trust. By the way I have no vested interest in them, just a happy customer. I also buy from "Power Enhancer". Actually where I bought the Fuchs this time round. If you want to enhance your understanding there is a website "Oilem" which has a lot of very interesting stuff to read. I think Oilem has some link to Power Enhancer but I don't see any problem with that.

Just a couple of things, opie oil give discount to all these motoring forums, so include maybe seatcupra or seatcupra.net in the discount code box. My only issue with opie oils is that they require a minimum order value to give you free delivery, I use Mobil One ESP 3W-30 in my cars so buying for both tends to get me over the minimum order value. Watch out for opie oil special discounts, like in your case free delivery for any order value.

Also make sure that you replace the drain plug sealing ring, I just buy mine from any VW Group dealership parts dept.

In the factory or engine plants, VW Group tend to only ever use Mahle filters which are painted black I think from memory, all VW Group dealership parts dept only stock Mann with VW Group branding and these filters are painted silver - same for supplying their own workshops. I buy all my Mann filters from ECP and usually at a good discount time though they always have some sort of discount.

I have a funny feeling that these 1.2TSI engines have a steel plate/cover on their engines, could be wrong though - I can't remember!

Absolutely RUM. That's why I ordered from Power Enhancer this time. They were £7.00 cheaper and free shipping. Next order will be for several of the family cars all at once so it'll be interesting to see what they do for me on that. I also find most of these suppliers - Opie for sure - do special offers on ebay, which was actually where I first saw the P E offer I think? Most ebay offers are with free shipping too.

100% on replacing the sealing washer too. The ally sump engines seem to use a sump plug with an integral sealing washer which can't be replaced on it's own - you have to buy the plug and washer together. £3.90 I seem to remember from my dealer. I've checked with a few workshops who say you probably would get away with reusing the old one but is it worth taking the chance? I know AVW always renew it.

Very interesting about the filters, thanks for that. The one I took off was silver with MHL in small letters on it's side near the VAG numbers. - It occurred to me that that might be "code" for Mahle! The after market Mahle one I bought is indeed black!

ECP has almost no presence up here. I think there's one in Glasgow? Euro car parts on the other hand? Everywhere! two in Edinburgh alone, one to the west and one north east. They've really got it covered but I find I don't get the brands and prices SRS give me. They've just been taken over by Group Auto but are retaining the SRS trading name, It'll be interesting to see if that affects small volume purchasers like me.

Sorry RUM. Having a bad day today. Trouble with builders at my boy's house. Very upsetting! ECP of course = Euro Car parts! I was thinking of GSF. If I still drank I'd pour a whisky and drown my sorrows!

Just a wee PS on ebay for the OP. Look carefully at what's being sold. The Castrol edge for instance seems to be displaying a somewhat different, but similarly themed, image on the latest containers when compared to older stock. It seemed to me that it might be quite easy to become confused? Then there's the "professional" range which seems to be what the dealer was putting in mine during it's warranty. They told me it was only available to the trade and indeed sold me a litre of magnatec for topping up as the "professional" didn't come in small bottles? However I saw it in 5 litre containers on ebay.

I would always renew an oil filter when doing an oil change.

Opie Oils selling on ebay as well, yes, for a regular buyer of stuff from Opie Oils, when I bumped into some "anti-rusting" fluid on ebay I thought "great" delivered postage free, then I logged into my Opie Oil account and checked it to see if I could get discount - no listed as being discounted by certain codes, but they would still be charging me postage - so buying it from their ebay store was much cheaper!

Professional version of Castrol Edge - I think that that oil is just normal Castrol Edge with a fluorescent tracer dye added - maybe just to prove during warranty that the correct oil has been used.

GSF, yes very annoying that they are, locally, over in Glasgow and not in an easy to find/park location!

Edit:- I'm sure that I bought a litre of Castrol Edge labelled up for "Volkswagen" or for "Audi" - ie as these two marques dealerships would either place in the boot of a new car or sell as top-up pack complete with plastic case, folding funnel, plastic gloves and paper wipes - for my daughter to keep in the boot of her new Leon Cupra.

A tracer dye in the oil? that makes a lot of sense as to why it's not so generally available and a wee bit of a nonsense of you being able to have your servicing done, whilst in warranty, by an independent workshop? wonder if the professional packs being advertised on ebay are old stock just about to run out of date? I believe, from what I've read, that oil is considered to be suitable for use as "new" until 5 years old. Anyone know different or can add to my knowledge here? I don't really like the idea of 5 year old oil where I don't know how it's been stored. Oils from both of my favoured suppliers has never been anywhere near a year old (from the date on the containers.) and usually just a month or so.

I was interested to see that Opie do "service packs" which include a disposable funnel, disposable gloves, dipstick wipe and hand wipes. I just looked up the Fuchs I'm using and these service packs seem to be 4 one litre packs and the funnel kit for £44.95 whereas you can buy the 5 litre pack on it's own for £37.99. (just checked on their site) Doesn't quite seem to make sense? Power Enhancer are still showing 5 litres for £30.95 with free delivery on orders over £15.

That seems to be always the case with oils, ie 4 X 1 LITRE way more than a 5LITRE can, maybe a bit silly to offer the lower volume option in a service kit, either only offer oils that come in 4litre cans or just offer the oil requested/chosen in a 5litre can.

These 1litre containers of Castrol Edge Professional might just be excess stock that need "moving on" - mind you, if I have not said previously, I once bought a VW touch-up twin pack paint+lacquer pencil kit via a VW Group seller on ebay, only trouble was, once I opened it up to use it a few months later, the paint stick had to be forced out - paint dried out! Looking at the production code, after buying a new one locally from my VW Van centre, I worked out that my ebay kit was made in 2010, wife's car was built in 2015 - hoh hum, I will not repeat that way of buying touch-up paint pencils!
