Whilst having a good poke around under the bonnet of my FR TDI, I noticed it has a chargecooler.

Thing which confused me is that I couldn't figure out where the fluid comes from/what sort of fluid is used. Surely it can't be trying to cool the charge air with 90 degree coolant??

Has anyone supplemented their cooling with an intercooler?

It uses the same coolant as the rest of the engine. It takes the coolant from the bottom of the rad where it is coolest. No need to add an intercooler, charge air temps on my FR tdi are in the mid 30's degC so the WCAC is very efficient. Plus in some cases the engine needs to increase intake air temps to keep moisture down.

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't got around to measuring the IAT on VCDS yet. I'm amazed that any coolant in the system gets cooler than 30 degrees, but glad to be proven wrong.

Yes indeed, that is fantastic! Thank you so much nljungstrand!

Should help speed up my understanding of the engine. Will come in handy trying to diagnose my lack of cabin heating. Had no idea the cooling system was so complex!

Neither did i
Lol after reading through it I was thinking that might be useful to whoever it was had the cabin heating problem, never relised the cabin heater matrix had its own pump

Had not realised it uses its own circuit. That will explain the high efficiency vs other manufacturers systems.

"Cooling system was so complex!"
Three separate cooling systems on the engine.

Mind you the engine comes up to temperature much quicker. On my Mk 2 Leon FR I travelled 10 miles plus before the engine got to "normal" temp!
