Dear Seat enthusiasts,
please, if my topic doesn't belong to this forum, may I kindly ask the mod to move it
Okay, I’m new on this forum and let me first introduce myself. My name is Luka (or Lucas if you like) and I come form Slovenia (next to Italy and Austria). Recently (end of July) I bought Seat Leon 1M, 1.9 TDI, 81 kW, year of December 2003.
This was my first car, so maybe this is why I didn’t know what to pay attention to, when buying a used car. The day I bought it, I met with the seller (an ordinary person, not a company or a dealer), I checked the car, it seemed fine except with few bumps on the car body. I didn’t mind for that since the car supposedly had 152.000 km. I wanted a car with low mileage to have it at least for few years. He was the second owner, the first owner was his aunt. I liked the car and bought it for 4200 eur.
The car was working fine, I only had to replace few things on chassis. For better safe than sorry I also replaced a cambelt and all what comes together with it. Since then I have been driven for 6000 km without any problems.
Okay, and now comes. One week ago I met with a guy who has VAG COM cable and diagnostic software. We were checking the car in case there are any problems and by the way we also checked the mileage computed by ECU – 284.000 km. We also found none of the problems on the car with diagnostic software, except something with antenna on stereo. I was pretty upset that day, but at least there were no problems on horizon.
I called a seller and wanted to have back a part of my purchase money, since the car with that much of mileage was overpaid. The seller was telling me he didn’t know that, that the car served him without any problem for many years, he said he is not a swindler nor a car dealer. By the phone he mentioned that car odometer was replaced (in the time of his aunt’s ownership) if this has anything to do with 284.000 km. He said he cannot pay me back 1000 eur as I have demanded, because he doesn’t have this money right now for several reasons (job, new apartment, he is also having a surgery right now (?)… ). He is willing to pay back at least something, if it turns out that the car really has so many kilometres, but not 1000 eur. Once again, he said he didn’t know that and that he was really surprised when I sent him an email with decription of my findings and that this seem impossible to him.
Somehow I believe a part of his story, I don’t know why. Maybe is he sooo talented in selling bullsh*t, but I couldn’t found any self-negation in his talk. When I was buying a car he also showed me where he works, I met his wife, she is a waitress and they bought me a coffee. He showed me a part of his personal life, maybe this is why a partially believe him.
What do I want to ask you? Please, is there any other way to check the real mileage? Could it be possible that ECU went wild? How can I check whether ECU or odometer was replaced? Are there any numbers on odometer which shows that this odometer wasn’t originally in my Sear Leon?
Please, I would really need your help before accusing someone without a solid proof.
Best regards. Luka
