Chirp/squeal noise at speed from front left...

Hi all, I was just wondering if I could get some opinions or advice on what, if anything, could be wrong...

A month ago, I noticed at slow speeds (around 10mph) I could hear a slight squealing noise from the front left, which was intermitent as the wheels rotated. Noise went away as soon as I touched the brakes, but de-clutching made no difference to the noise. It sounded to me like a brake pad was seized in the caliper or something, so I took the front left brakes apart, cleanded them all up, then all seemed fine for a few days...

The other day while on the motorway, the noise came back, but of course at a much higher frequency. I could hear the noise when the steering was in a particular position (just as I turned off centre, like changing lanes, the noise would happen), but not when driving in a straight line. Again, braking made the noise stop.

I heard the same noise again today on the way to work, so when I got to the car park, I tried having a look at the wheel, and I noticed the front left wheel felt warmer than the front right.

Anyone know what this could be? I thought it was brake seizing at first, but not so sure now. I'm planning on doing wishbone bushes and a lowering kit soon, so might be a good time to change something else if needed....

Cheers :)

Id check the wheel bearing, if its starting to go it could be causing wheel wobble?
Or could you have a warped disk

Mines in the garage today for the exact same thing, Mines coming from drivers front but i can't always get it to do it when driving forward but when it does its when im slightly steering to the right but like you lot a quick dab of the brakes stops it or steering back to the left. Also on mine if i reverse back to the right it squeals like a pig

Funny thing is the noise started some 100miles after the MOT so im at a loss, also had new brakes all round last year so

I'll post back later with an update....

Would be great to hear what the garage say. I didn't notice any of the noise this morning, but it still worries me a little...

Right, according to them its a small metal sleeve/ring? that sits between the gaiter & the hub? or something like that  that has split and has expanded, only costs like 90p (and an hours labour probably lol) which is causing the noise.

The bad news for me is my aircon unit might need a new controller (one in the engine bay) and fans, hardly use my car and it still costs me  :D

OK, thanks for posting this up. So, do they mean one of the metal bands that holds the CV boot on? Not sure if I can think of any other small metal sleeve or ring in that area...

Well got the car back and the noise is still there, which i expected to be honest as nothing is ever that simple. I'm now leaning towards it being the bearing but again still guessing as there's no play in it so they say so it's going to be a mindless process of elimination...BUT it can bloody wait, good news aircon / fans etc now working properly [B)]

Not with mine no, mine's been squealing like a pig again but i'm in no mood to chuck anymore money at my car to find the fault at the mo.

Mine is the same, the noise is intermittant and it drives me insane at times. [:@]

Car only passed it's MOT a week ago and just needed a new suspension bush, no other advisories, but has been making the noise for about three or four months.

I do have a wheel bearing that will need doing, but there doesn't seem to be excessive play?

The ring will probably be the "dust" shield/ring that gets fitted to the inside of the hub, I seem to remember replacing them when I had the drive shafts out to "do" the springs (I think).

Have any of you taken the brake calliper and pads out, cleaned up/freed up everything, lightly relubed the pads at where they touch the calliper bracket and reassembled everything - oh and make sure that the disc rear shield is not "just" touching the disc and/or has anything lodged in there?

This is what I did, because the noise was originally just a squeak that could be heard at slow speeds. A clean up of the brakes seemed to do the job for a short time, but now it only seems to make a noise at higher speeds. But I haven't noticed it for the last few days...

Just a quick update: car went in for a new osf wheel bearing but they decided not to fit a new one and took the disc off pads out etc instead, and its been nearly 2wks and there hasn't been any noise since so

So, they basically just took the brakes apart, cleaned everything and put it back together? Maybe I need to do that again with mine, as it's still making the noise sometimes...

Glad to hear you cars OK now!
