As explained very estutely by the more techinical members on here..its not as simple as cut and shut case...

my dad had decades experience in this, told me he did this with a couple of his E30's in the 80's and they were RWD and on its bum bum...

ad-dan...dont get lower springs...dont cut your currents...buy coilovers and be happy :) yeah a bit more expensive but a well worth investment. :)

thanks for the responses, i'm not going to do this now after hearing some of the more technical guy's explanations rather than just swearing, i appreciate it is more of an old skool kinda thing and have heard plenty of stories of chopped springs on various cars back in the day, but i may look into the air ride option or just chop the car in altogether!

Danmay - no. :D

Cos I'm a nice man and don't bite your man vegetables off for asking a question. Plus if you lower it with springs - you will need shocks aswell cos it'll shag the shocks. ;)

 cheers Ash, thank you for not putting your teeth near my man vegetables for asking a silly question

toying with cupra suspension as its a bit firmer and ever so slightly lower too.......

but on the other hand i could just buy myself some jeans and shoes with the money, my gf would approve more, leading to possible bedroom adventures, or lower it 10mm, have the 'why dont you stop spending money on your car, u can sleep in my bed but don't expect anything' talk

That's perfectly ok. :D

Yes it is but if you're gonna go to all that bother you'd be better getting coilies. ;)

We all know THAT talk. ;)

I haven`t heard of people cutting springs in years for road cars as 99.9% of the time you can buy lowering springs for the same price of having your spring cut professionally. I had it done to a couple of cars i owned in the late eighties by an ex professional touring car mechanic that owned a tuning garage near me and the car handled alright. I also remember you could buy clamps that you fitted to the car springs to compress them to lower cars.

Maybe you could get lots of mates to sit in your car and weigh it down, then put masses of tiewraps around some of the coils while compressed :D Sorry, just can't stop thinking of that post & photo on the Saxo forum !!

link to said post ? would be worth a look .

i would rather pay £100 for decent springs than crash your car and kill someone;)

mate you sound like youve just come out of prison since being jailed in the late 1980s.:clap::clap:
chopping of springs is what alot of old skool fellas did. i even bought qa golf gti mk 2 with chopped springs.
WAKE UP MATE AND GET YOURSELF A DECENT SET OF AFTER MARKET SPRINGS.
EVEN THE CHEAPEST ON EBAY IS MILES BETTER THAN CHOPPED ONES.

He's only 20 mate give him a break...hardly has had years to know about this, hence the question..;)

I have no technical knowledge, hence why i asked, this forum used to be a friendly place but everyone nowadays seems to be really sharp and have an attitude!

i agree with him!!!

this is why i dont use this place often!! surely a forum is a place to ask questions and get information!! the guy only asked for advice! and you all jumped on him!!

Turn it the other way around, if it was you who didnt have a clue about mechanics and you got pounced on like that, wouldnt you feel like a right t!t....

(ill probably get abused for posting this. but the truth hurts.. )

Well said that man! It’s only a question that he needed answering. If you’re not going to be helpful don’t post up simple as.

Dan - Speak to Midland VW, IIRC they are in Cannock.

They are pretty helpful and will provide a price for the supply and fit of springs.

Or speak to PSI Tuning in Newcastle, they supply, and supply and fit everything for VAG.

My suspension kit (shocks and springs) was £275 and i fitted myself!!

Shout up if ya need anything
