Hey guys. The last week or so ive noticed a random like grinding / metal rattling sounds around in the engine bay.

When lightly accelerating say in 2nd then letting off the gas it'll make a horrible sound like above, it'll keep making the noise until it starts pulling itself (no gas, but the engine ticking over, still in 2nd)

It will also do the same in 1 / 3 / 4 / 5 but gets progressively quieter

Sometimes at idle in neutral without the clutch despressed itll make the sound, despressing the clutch almost stops it. If i just touch the accelerator to just above 1000rpm itll stop also

If its not making the really loud noise like above it will always make a very slight ticking clunking noise at idle with or without the clutch pressed

The cars been remapped by the way since about 30k, its on 56k at the mo, no uprated clutch

Tried explaining it the best i can :(

Anyone know what the problem is?

yep if you follow the manifold down under the engine at the front you`ll see it just give it a tap and listen out

I remember my Ibiza gearbox used to be a bit noisy while it was idling. Almost as if there was a handful of pebbles rattling round inside it...that's the best explanation I could think of.

I always suspected it was the DMF but never really investigated.

Started making the noises quite early on, by 30-40k I think...but was still going strong until around 101k miles. (After which there probably were some bits of stone inside it :D )

Ok, ive been to the stealers with the car and they couldnt work out what was wrong with it!

They said they want £270 for 4 hours labour to stip it and see if they can find the fault!

Anyone else have ideas?!

sounds like the first motion shaft bearing in the gearbox to me, is the rattle worse with the clutch fully depressed. so difficult to tell because the TDI's rattle so much anyway, have you cheaked the gearbox for oil ? if you drain it out collect it carfully and cheak it for signs of metal content.

Update. Been to an independant garage, they quickly took of the bottom engine cover and instantly found that the clutch and flywheel were vibrating a rediculous amount when the engine swtiched off. Need it replacing . clutch £188 + DMF £211 + labour + VAT = ouch (cry)

p.s. thumbs down for Trenton Hull (Seat dealer) wanting £270 to find the fault! When it took 5 mins for £0 at the independant!

Ok, so i need to buy the new clutch and fly wheel

While it needs doing i may as well buy an uprated clutch me thinks, cost much more? Anywhere specific I should be buying from? Any particular brand?

thanks
