I've got a 2004 54 plate 1.8T 20v 225 Cupra R, and recently had a noise starting to appear, this is when engine is running, car is in neutral and clutch out. Then upon dipping clutch this noise slowly wears down. If clutch back out then dipped again whilst engaging a gear the noise once again stops. Once setting off on pulling clutch out this noise starts again, sounds worst in 1st 2nd and partially 3rd. Been told I need a full gear box recon which inc vat and recon of this box and fitting... £1100

I've had a little browse for help and getting few answers like a throw out bearing/realise bearing.

Any help appreciated.

Hi there

Sounds like a very similar issue I just had with mine, it's starts off exactly how you described, then got to the point where it sounded like a very high pitch whine in 1st and 2nd. Took the car in Tuesday and was told the bearings were shot and needed replacing. Total strip and rebuild all for £400, by a gearbox specialist in Milton Keynes.

I've been told this now by 3 other people. One guy had a VW Polo TDI that had same issue for 5 years and never had a fault was just an annoying noise. Obvz just got a garage that's trying to get £1100 out of me, would also mean my car been off road for a week they said aswell. Thank you for your reply tho Paul, much appreciated mate

Just keep an eye on it, if you get the high pitch noise then get it done. Best describe the noise as like a distant police siren although could be mistaken for the turbo failure noise!!

Tbh honest sounds like a bearing going round that's loose, and for the gearbox shim it's been confirmed it's not the box it's just the clutch throw out bearing I've been told just going to keep an eye on it. Thanks for your help lads
