Driving along in town earlier, I pulled up at the lights and noticed the car idling roughly. Drove the 2 minutes back home and felt the car chugging and losing power coupled with engine management light.

Plugged her into VCDS and had a fault code for a misfire on cylinder 3. I thought I'd swap the coil pack to another cylinder to see if the misfire followed the coil pack, so that I could eliminate a problem with the plugs or wiring. Here's what I found:

Coil pack totally snapped into 2 pieces. It was a nightmare trying to get a pair of pliers on the bottom part to pull it off the plug. It's a genuine VAG coil pack too.

New one ordered for collection from ECP tomorrow morning.

Personally mate I would change all 4 to avoid another one go which chances are it will. I had 2 go and replaced all 4.

... and as we all know, **** happens at the most inconvenient time. Will keep the others in the boot as spares.

i didn't realise but only one of my coil packs was upgraded to the latest spec when i bought the car. i found out when one of the old ones (cyl 2) died on holiday in france, so replaced that one with latest spec too (after stuttering around for a few days)

WHen i got back to the UK, i bought a set of 4 to the upgraded spec - now i have all upgraded and two spare in the boot. don't want that happening again!
