Coil Spring - Altea Sport

Depends on whether or not you have Sports suspension fitted as standard. pm me your vin number I can check what is suppose to be fitted. Springs are also colour coded with carious spots of paint on them to identify what one it is.

Etka shows:

1K0 511 155 BF
Coil spring for sports-type running gear.

1 paint mark white
3 paint marks yellow

if you can check the spring ow check for those paint marks. they will be somewhere in the middle of the spring.
if your replacing suspension it is best to do it in pairs.

Coil Springs

Thanks for this ,
The Coil spring was replaced yesterday as MOT showed Broken Rear Spring. Main Dealer has done the Job, problem is after picking up car it feels totally different to drive, seems to be pulling to nearside, I was wondering if spring had been broken for long period would this have any adverse wear on Tyres? I have inner wear on fronts but plenty of tread across rest of tyre.
I am definately feeling a different drive in the car.
I was concerned that maybe they didnt fit the right spring (itemised on the bill which i am about to check) or as you advise maybe should have done other side at same time.
Any thoughts you may have on above are appreciated.

well springs can go but if one has gone the other will most likely go also. other thing is that now the suspension geometry will have been altered.

A mate of mine had a skoda octavia front spring go. The delaer replaced only one, then month later the other one went::-o

Personally I would get the other one done then go for a 4 wheel alignment to get all wheels/suspension setup correctly. 4 wheel alignment cost approx 40-60 quid but worth it once the geometry is altered.

Coil Springs

Just checked invoice and additional paperwork.

Invoice shows

S1K0511115BF RR COIL SPRING

Additional paperwork for diagnosis for MOT shows

Broken O/S/R SPRING ( 4 YELLOW)

The Dealer I use have always been spot on with servicing etc, .

I did ask the question prior to the Job being carried out, would they need to do both sides and the response I got back was No.
The numbers above almost tie in to what you advised. i am thinking maybe now the spring is repaired it could be the tyres.?

Any advice appreciated

Alignment will be most likely out now and affect the tracking and the way the car feels. since you have one new spring and one old spring on the rear it will feel different and maybe unbalanced. i personally never change one spring on its own. its just not worth doing one without the other, then getting the alignment done.

Coil Spring Update

Went back to dealer this morning and explained issues, must admit they were pretty helpful and listened, .. did'nt say no when I asked them to replace the other side also (have booked it in tomorrow so will update on completion).
Also asked for the 4 wheel alignment to be carried out. They said normal price is £79 but they will do this for £35 so not complaining as never had this done before and owned car rom new.
Mileage is now 76K - other than coil spring and pads/tyres over the preiods car has needed no other work so cannot really complain.
I See some Altea's on Autotrade with 140K miles so with regular servicing car should be good for that sort of mileage.
When purchased I got one of the fist 2.0 TDI sports in the UK so on another note it would be intersting to see who currently has the highest mileage altea on the forums:confused:

Coil Spring - Sorted :)

Update

Car went back to dealers this morning and had nearside coil spring replaced also, followed up with the 4 wheel alignment.
Picked up this afternoon, Now absolutley spot on. Feels solid and tight on the road.
In the End this cost an additional £150 Including the alignment but has made a significant difference on the Road.
Roll on the Next 75K of trouble free Seat motoring (unless I can wangle a replacement but need to get permission fron THE BOSS:))

Thanks for all the advice and help... Appreciated

I'm a little surprised the dealers would only replace a single spring - surely replacing in pairs would be a rule for safety and handling consistency reasons?

Yeah, common good practise is to at least recommend and offer to replace both at the same time, for exactly the reasons above.

As regards mileage on Alteas, my 2005 Sport 2.0ltr TDI is just over 100k miles now.:)

I have just changed the tyres and had all 4 wheels aligned (to sort out some uneven wear) and now I have broken the NSF coil spring by hitting a pothole, after replacing the spring should I get the alinment done again or see how the car feels to drive first? Its a Altea 2.0 TDI Sport '04 82,000 miles. Where can I get 2 springs for a reasonable price? Stealers want £75 just for one! The car is over due for a service and the cambelt has never been changed, is now the right time?

Warranty wont pay for pairs so normally dealer practice follows those guidelines.

Something worth noting there is also a bulletin that if you find a certian type of spring seat has been fitted (like a big washer under the spring) then it needs to be changed for a modified item. the material in the seat has sped up the corrosion in the bottom of the spring.
