My LCR does it and...

so did my LC.

Sounds expensive and nasty and IMO is a lack of of oil in the head......
Only lasts 1/3 of a second or so before settling to a normal warm up cycle....

It only happens to mine if its really cold and I do the following in anticipation first thing.
Twist the key and crank engine but switch off before it catches(usually 3-4 cranks of the starter.)
If its really icy I repeat the process.
On third twist of key engine fires up nice and smooth.

I think its just a VAG thing and I doubt it does any real damage but the noise is worrying

don't the heads have small dents(if thats the right word) in them they keep the oil in the head when turned off.so as soon as the engine turns the oil is there to lubricate instantly?

yep, happened to me this morning as well, i thought :wtf: , sounded like i blew the turbo gasket again (more like a tractor) noise, it also ideld rough and thought it was going to cut out, then it fired up again, it continued for about 30 seconds then i thought it must be the coil packs. however when i turned off the engine and turned it back on again it started fine, my mate who lives up the street from me has a golf gttdi said that the same thing had happened to him, as i was out this morning at 6:30 talking to him while de-icing my windows :(

could this be a vvt thing?car starts with emissions in mind,so adjusts timing to suit,a few of rotations on and the ecu adjusts?wheres a clinical max_torque post when you need one? :)

Doesn't last that long, litrally a second or so just at start up, 30 seconds of this, and id be crying. :p

Developed a new problem tonight anyway, seems ive got a slippy clutch, but is more likely to be the dreaded Master/Slave cylinder sticking. :( damn cars.

Nah Z if that goes, the clutch peddle goes down and dont come back up, or you have to pull it up, did it just slip when cold? TDi's do this running big torque mate

Did more than slip, no drive completely, then when i dipped the clutch, and brought it back up, i got drive, seems to be something wrong, its never done this before.

The noise is the hyd' tappets, pumping back up(taking slack) happens when parked up extended periods i.e overnight, worse when cold, due to oil being like tar lol, nowt to worry about, my golf gti 150 1.8t did it, not a VVT thing as earlier engines did not have this, and still do it. best to run 0w/30 this weather helps loads ;)

did clutch come back up on it's own? or did you assist with foot? was car cold?

Clutch went down as normal, and returned as normal, car was upto temperature, but it was nearing the end of a 20 min stop start journey, from my work, 5 miles away to my home this evening. It never got much over 40mph, due to traffic, lights etc.

Car stopped in front of me, to turn right into a car park, i slowed then stopped, was on a slight gradient, 1st gear, tried to pull off, it slipped, like wheel spin, but no tcs light, then no to little drive, thought thats odd, dipped the clutch pedal, brought it back up, then had full drive, drove 100 yards if that, changed to 2nd, again, slipped, but not as bad.

Then appeared to be ok, but was litrally, on my road anyway, pulled onto my driveway, slapped the handbrake on, and did a bit of a clutch test, biting point still nice and low, and was pulling to the point that it then inched forward, with the handbrake on.

very odd, no dodgy smells or anything to say the clutch was burning or anything.

Need to pop it into a dealer, just to be sure.

Could be the slave cylinder then Z in gearbox, no way your clutch should be feked with your mileage, happened on my golf when i was in stop start traffic for 2 hours, once it had a good run/caining sorted it's self out and never did it again :D

Well id discounted the clutch itself really, it really would have been unlikely given its only done 13500 miles from new.

And its not like im down the Pod every weekend seeing if i can smoke my tyres. nearest mine gets to the redline is on a rolling road. :p
