Cold start problems sorted

Finally sorted cold start and hesitation problems, Heres what i did.

Replaced split hose under manifold (sorted engine light) £15

replaced Temp sender unit (made no difference)£7

reset Throttle body (made no difference)

stopped using fuel from supermarkets a couple of days ago ( improved performance but didn't cure problems completely)

today i cleaned throttle body, replaced air filter, replaced plugs.£25 waited six hours to make sure it was cold started and drove of straight away drives like a dream and didn't miss a beat, didn't realize how much power the engine had. now getting average 31 mpg. well please.:D

Hi Kev,

Any more probs since as I have the smae prob. Can't see any split pipes and runs fine after 20 seconds or so. If i turn engine off and back on again it works spot on. replaced air filter 2 weeks ago.

Hi keza1
no further problems i think the split hose was just a coincidence, i would clean your throttle-body mine looked clean until i sprayed carb cleaner into it, if it still getting problems replace spark plugs i replaced mine with Bosch super 4s they were £3.50 from euro car parts starts and runs OK even on the really cold mornings, also improved mpg.

Hi guys

I too have the same issue with my 2002 S3. I have replaced the temp sensor and will try the MAF in the morning. My spark plugs were changed about 4 months ago as part of my service so I'm guessing the problem will probably be a dirty TB. Is there a guide to cleaning the TB anywhere?

cleaned my TB at the weekend. its well easy.

unscrew the clip on the turbo pipe going to the TB and pull off the pipe.

the TB is bolted to the inlet by 4 5mm allen bolts unbolt it and take the TB off.

i now switched the ignition on a wedged a broom on the accelerator to open the TB butterfly

clean it all up. i used some high voltage cable wipes that i use at work.

put it all back together and reset theTB via vagcom

I have changed the temp sensor and air filter and still no difference....I have really slight flat spots in low revs. Would that be MAF? It was replaced a few months ago.

I would clean throttle body first a tin of carb cleaner only cost about £5 you'll be surprised what difference it makes.

but then i need to reset the TB?? with VAG-COM?? How do i do that if not got it??

kev....one more thing. u mentioned you cleaned the TB then reset it a week later. can you drive the car in that time? what difference does it make if it is not reset?

HI i removed the TB but not the electrical connection spayed it with carb cleaner used a small soft paint brush to get into the awkward places then i put the ignition on placed a brick on accelerator that opens the butterfly gave it another spay and brush and the a final spray to make sure all the muck had gone turn ignition off put it all back together. first 30 seconds it run rough until all traces of cleaner had gone then-it was fine.
to be honest when i reset TB a week later didn't notice any difference but the TB was reset a couple of weeks before i cleaned it. give it a clean as described it should sort your problems out then get it reset when you can provided you don't force the butterfly by hand or disconnect electrics it will be fine. whilst ignition is on and butterfly is open you will notice a very slight buzz from TB thats normal its just the stepper motor.
Hope this helps. I spoke to a mate that works for Breeze VW he also said provided its not disconnected or forced then should be fine but if you haven't had a reset for a while the its probably worth doing at sum point after cleaning.

Sorry forgot to answer your origianal question yes i did use the car as normal for a week before getting TB reset but as i said didnt seem to make and difference and vag com readings didnt change.

cleaned the TB this afternoon...can tell a difference straight away. Need to try when cold. Will keep you posted.
