Connects2 and alana HU

Hey...

Im going to ask this even though I'm sure I'm going to get a comment like 'Stop being so dammn stupid' (thats the polite version)

When I bought my Ibiza it came with a Sony CD Changer and a connects2 unit. The guy who I bought it off didn't install it, because, apparently he is just as daft as me.

The pics below show the cable that should go from the Connects to the HU. Only thing is I'm sure its the wrong one?! Am I right in thinking this, or am I just looking in the wrong place?

And, I would have to connect it to the back of the HU right?

If it is the wrong one, where can I get the correct lead from? Or is it a whole new Connects2 thing?

Apparently the guy had this one in his last Ibiza, which I'm assuming was the one with the Aura HU, and not the Alana.

The only way to be sure if it's right or wrong is to connect it. If the HU works why are you asking about the connects2 adaptor.

You didnt read the question, either that or I wrote in such a confusing manner that you didnt understand it. Theres nothing wrong with the Head Unit. The question was about connecting the SONY CD CHANGER to the HU. As in, is this the correct lead to connect to the HU? 'Cos I sure can't find a place to connect that end of the lead...

i.e the reason I was asking about the connects2.

OK I understand now, you have a factory HU and a sony 6disc with a connects2 and you think the connects2 is the wrong one.


Well if it doesn't fit it must be wrong

The lead from the 6disc will plug directly into the back of the HU where there is an unused socket.

That connects2 block is essentially a wire rearranger.

The plug you are holding is the same plug thats on the end of my OE CD changer (its sat next to me in my lounge!), so it connects to the OE CD changer lead.

This is how it should run:

Head unit > OE changer cable > Connects2 box > Sony changer.

MK4s don't come with changer leads pre installed, so you'll have to buy one if you don't have one already. The part number the CD changer lead is 1J0051592A (long enough for boot install) or 1M2971735 (short for glove box install).

You were lucky, if my changer was in my car, I'm sure it wouldve taken us days to work out!

The long wire is a MK4 Golf number, so any VW, SEAT or Skoda dealer.

The short wire is actually a MK1 Leon number, so you can only get that from a SEAT dealer.

You can also get chinese copies off eBay, but I bet you get loads of interference from them...I went genuine. I've been told they're around £20-30+VAT from the stealers, but its a small price to pay if the eBay one's rubbish and you have to rip out your interior again!

and i can recommend the xcarlink ipod connector - works flawlessly with the alana head unit and steering wheel controls. just get yourself one of the new nano's, plenty more music than a 6 or 10 cd changer!

And, it means I got lots more room in my glove box for things I dont really need
Could mount it in the ashtray too. I'm full of ideas and excitement too now!

Still though, I want that little cable 'cos apparently theres still some CDs in the unit... And I'm guessing I would need it for any of the other IPod connectors I use.

won't the cd changer get power from somewhere else other than the cable? all u need is power to eject the magazine.

i had my ipod cable routed to the little cubby thing under the stereo, which worked alright for a while, other than it flying out on occasion if acceleratng hard, when it would dangle from the console or hit me hand when holding the gear knob!

so i got brodit dash mount for it. now i can seewhats playing all the time... love it.

DO you have to formulate your own playlists to be able to use it through the head unit?

Where is it possible to get hold of the cable to connect it. Also when you connect it to the rear does it mean you put it in the same part as you would the CD changer connetion, so not possible to have both an Ipod and CD changer?

with the xcarlink i THINK you can plug in ipod AND CD changer. i cant remember how it works ive had mine a long time now. if you google xcarlink they have a website.
i think it sort of doubles the inputs. cd changer plugs into the xcarlink and the xcarlink into the HU. the xcarlink does plug into the cd changer i know that for definate. CD6 on the HU selects it.

not sure what you mean by where to get hold of cable to connect it? mine came with everything you need.

as for the ipod functions,

pressing 1 on the head unit will make the ipod controls active for you to play whatever u choose by selecting on the ipod. ipod display is active and shows whats playing. pretty much like plugging your ipod into any stereo.
head unit just displays play-time, and it just counts up and up unless you skip track in which case it starts at 0 at the new song. if you don't skip for a 20 minute journey the headunit will just count up as if it were a 20 min track.

head unit controls and steering wheel controls if u have them work as normal controlling the ipod.

pressing 2-6 on the HU selects playlists 1-5 - the first 5 playlists on the ipod. A little confusing with it being first playlist as 2, 2nd as 3, 3rd as 4 etc. and it also turns off shuffle when you do this, so it always plays the songs in the order theyre in the playlist, which i found annoying but it depends what u want.

personally i dont use the playlist buttons, i just plug ipod in and set it playing what i fancy - whether its a playlist, an artist, album or just shuffle all songs - and then I can use either the ipod, the HU or the steering wheel to change track, skip forward, etc.

really depends what u want. i highly recommend it if you plan on using it like ive said, and want to keep factory head unit, OEM look or whatever.
