Hi all

I'm considering buying a Cupra Leon in either V2 or V3 trim with the 1.5 eTSI DSG up to a year old however I've has a horrendous experience the last time I purchased a VAG car back in 2021 and wanted to see if these issues have been sorted in newer VAG cars before buying.

The issues I had were with a new Mark 8 (Mark Hate!) Golf GTI which I bought in 2021 and they were are follows:-
  • Aircon not syncing and resetting every time the car is started.
  • Choppy Bluetooth connection at times when trying to use Android Auto resulting in broken audio when using Google Maps SatNav directions.
  • Irritating buzz / rattle coming from the plastic around where the SOS button / Windscreen controls are located. This is intermittent and only happens on rough road surfaces, but it is really annoying when it does happen!
  • A double click click sound (speaker farts) coming through the speakers that results in the car losing connecting to the VW Servers and at the weekend just gone resulted in the car displaying an SOS Fault error message. The SOS button changed from green to red. It has since cleared itself however I suspect that it’s just a matter of time before this error happens again.
  • The infotainment was very laggy at times. For example, the infotainment completely froze on a journey showing ‘loading user’ and a spinning wheel constantly on screen rendering it completely unusable. I was able to resolve this by holding down the power button on the infotainment for around 20 seconds until the system rebooted but it took me a while to figure this out.
  • The reversing camera at times flickered badly.
  • I also needed to have the airbag in the steering wheel replaced as it was making a bad creaking sound when manoeuvring at low speed.

Adaptive Cruise Control Issues:-
  • Whilst travelling on a dual carriageway using Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) the car slowed from 70mph to 44mph for no reason whatsoever. This resulted in the vehicle behind having to take drastic action to avoid a collision with me.
  • There have been several occasions where I passed a vehicle to my left travelling slower than myself and has caused my vehicle to slow down to match their speed.
  • The digital drivers display frequently showed non-UK speed limits of 110, 90 or 45 which I believe is the car showing speed limits in kph for reasons unknown.
  • Another failure of the Adaptive Cruise Control system resulted in the vehicle carrying out an emergency assist breaking procedure when there was nothing at all in front of me which would have caused this to happen. For no reason, the car let out a high-pitched beep to warn me of an impending collision and then sharply applied the brakes. This resulted in the vehicle travelling behind me to brake sharply in turn and swerve into the next lane to avoid a rear end collision with me. In short it was incredibly lucky that he did not crash into the back of me and cause a serious accident in the process.
I owned a Mark 7.5 Golf R-Line before the GTI and never had any issues at all but the Golf Mk8 was shockingly bad and I ended up rejecting the car. Using adaptive cruise control on longer journey is one of my most used features on any car so it's important for me that it works flawlessly.

Have VAG sorted out these infotainment and ACC issues on the new facelifted Cupra Leon?

Anything else I should be aware of?

It would be good to know as I simply couldn't face going through similar issues that I experienced with the Mk 8 Golf GTI so If anyone is able to offer any advice it would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Mike

There are many commonly mentioned issues with the Leon, both pre and post facelift.

Have they been completely rectified - no.

Have a look through the threads that have been created over the last 18 months, those in the MK4 Cupra Leon section in particular.

Will you experience things you're not happy with on newer models? I'm afraid so.
