Cooling fan issue with Climate Control

Now then...

Had a search, apparantly the small radiator fan is supposed to stay on slow when the Air Con is on.

Trouble is both fans come on fast for a quick 10 second blast every minute or so, even when the engine is cold.

Nothing happens when Air Con is off.

Any ideas chaps?

Really? 100% sure? Its in for a service soon, would love to tell them whats wrong with it.

If your car is still under warranty get yourself down to the dealer they will sort it. The problem is your slow speed fan controller, if this carrys on you could blow fuses or blow your fast speed fans and end up with no cooling fans whatsoever, i had this on mine, new fans problem solved, this is common on VAG cars.

Cool, so either temp fan for air con or slow speed controller.

strange, this happens on mine, let me get this straight... ...

When the car's a.c is on, every few minutes there is a fan that comes on for about 10 seconds and then turns off. This happend every few minutes.

Mate I am 99% sure this is normal as I have noticed it on mine and has never caused a problem.

From searching, there is supposed to be the small fan which constantly turns to cool the air con, the big one is not supposed to turn unless the car is very hot, (mines a diesel so, it should never turn!!)

mines in on friday having the full fan system replaced.

With the enigine running & the AC on - the 2 large fans should spin slowly, if they do not then the slow speed setting on the fans is shot.

What happens instead is the fans will cut in flat out for short bursts in an attempt to cool down the AC Rad.

Yes thats right, I believe the TDI has one large and 1 small though, but same principle. Apparantly its a common fault.

ive got this too... my warrantees jus ran last month..grr its been doing it for a good while though..its anoying when the fans kicking all the time when staionary even from cold!..

im hoping they will still do it under warantee..coz it was doing it when i took it for a end of warrantee check!..but i didnt know it was a fault till now!..im not sure how to explain it to them tho..coz damm dealers are thick as **** n dont listen to wat you tell them!..

Its the slow speed setting on fan VAG use a resistor inside fan that burns out, controller then pulses fans to cool aircon rad! Very common have a look on UKmkIV forum long guide!!! Also a how to fix for good if not in warranty at less cost than new fan or fans!!

spot on cheers, that looks a bit dangerous for someone with my lack of electrical skills. the rad is coming out soon so may as wel get the fans changed at the same time.

Do the fans on the back of the radiator come as an entire unit? or can you buy the bit with the speed controlers in?

u know when its been fixed under warantty.....do they use a uprated part so it doesn't happen again?

Or even if it has been replaced up warranty is it likely to happen again?
