Iwade, Kent
im doing a service in the next couple of days and heard you need to change the copper washer on the plug.. is this the case or can i get away with using the old one?

stu

They don't have copper washers on them - You're supposed to replace the whole bolt.

Don't think anyone bothers though TBH, I've re-used mine about 4 times now, and it's bone dry.

Every dealer I've worked at has always replaced them and kept them in stock. By the book you are supposed to renew them.

Yep all VAG dealers change the sump plug complete. The washer is part of the plug. Stu il bring a couple home. If your about we can meet up and il give you them.

are you about over the weekend mate? i'll be over there sat sun if ur about. getting the fmic fitted 2mora i hope. can you grab me a sump plug to lol

You can always anneal the exsting washer (provided it isn't split) to soften it for re-use. Heat to cherry red and allow to cool. A new one is better though. While its off, measure it so you can get a new one from Halfords next time:)

My Seat dealer always chucks a new plug in with the filter for free.

Always change it, the hassle it would cause for the sake of a quid if the thread deteriorated would be stupid in my opinion.

iv seen a magnetic one on awesome with 10 washers for £12 so might just get that.. it gets serviced at garages anyway but i like to do a few oil changes inbetween lol

dealers should realistically stock both the bolt (with washer) and washer seperatley - not all VAG vehicles have the same sump plug so some require a new washer, on the ibiza 1.2s the sump plug and washer are 2 seperate parts but the washer also fits the other models using a 19mm plug.

i used to have 100s if not 1000s in a tub in my box at the dealers from all the services i'd done, i kept them like scalps - dunno why really?

and for the sake of £1 or £2 you might as well change it.
